I discovered last night that a lot of times, people who harass other members are able to get away with it with little punishment from them moderators because the members they are harassing rarely report this behavior. I just wanted to post a friendly reminder that if you are attacked by a member, you can and should report him or her so that action can be taken. I would also like to ask that if you do see anything of this nature, that you do report it because sometimes the victim might not feel confident reporting this. I think we need to clean up the forums, so I'll make a solid effort to help do this. Hopefully everyone else does too :)

This has nothing to do with me, by the way; this is about other people. Certain people who wanted to post rude lies in this thread should refrain because it has nothing to do with them.

So everyone on this site should report you for calling them conceited?

Or maybe we can all be a little more thick skinned, and accept that this in the Internetz?

You shouldn't run around reporting posts just for the heck of it, but if there are 'people who harass other members' they ought to be reported.

Luckily they're pretty merciful around here, otherwise I probably would have been banned for encouraging criminal offenses a long time ago.

^^this

Is there a specific incident that we're referencing here?

No member should be repeatedly harassed on the forum, and we should all take into account that some of us have a higher tolerance for actions that may be interpreted as harassment than others. I categorically reject the idea that people have a right not to be offended, but it is our ethical responsibility as members of a community to respect -if such a wish is expressed- such a member's desire to be left alone. It is precisely when a member says "leave me alone" or something to that effect that the accosting member ought to (in a metaphorical sense) walk away.

No member should openly attack another member in any way, especially if the member who attacks is targeting a younger member or a member of the opposite sex. Should members have a right to express controversial opinions? Absolutely. That does not require personal attacks of the exchange of vitriolic remarks.

I'm not one of those "let's all come together and talk about our feelings" types, and by now you all know that. But when I say "this is the internet, thick skin is a virtue" that in no way means that I support an "open season" (to use a hunting reference) on all members. We are not in a perpetual state of war on DDO, nor should we be. What I do mean to communicate when I say "this is the internet, thick skin is a virtue" is to suggest that we all approach what is said on DDO with the proper perspective -and not let things bother us.

When someone offends you, if you react, you give them power over you -that is you allow their actions to control your emotions. It is very hard to get me upset, because at the end of the day, even when another member creates a forum and uses it to blatantly and unapologetically attack me, the very action of doing so suggests more about the member who is doing it, than it does about me. If a person would use a blog divested from this site to attack members of this site, this tells me that such a person has entirely too much invested on this site and in my view of that person. I say that only to illustrate the point that I know what it's like to be attacked, blatantly and directly. Heineken has gone above and beyond himself to lambast me on his DDO elite blog, but as one of the kids I used to teach would say "It's whateves'." It's also hilarious, but I digress.

As a part of a community, which we are, we have responsibilities to each other. If we see something that looks like it's going to hurt someone, we have an obligation to report it. That said, we also need to take into account that when someone is doing something questionable, they may not realize the impact that their words have. I think that the overwhelming majority of members on DDO are not inherently malicious, and they don't mean to cause harm. But if their actions do, they must stop. Period. There is no middle ground on this issue. It's the respectful thing to do, and it's the right thing to do.

That's not about you. The member to whom it refers will know who he is, and why it's necessary to mention. It appalls me that this isn't ingrained as common sense for some, but apparently it is.

There is indeed a line.

This is DEBATE.ORG, NOT 4CHAN- there are rules and there are certain expectations for conduct.

If anybody ever feels someone has crossed the line, anybody can feel free to contact me or, if you would prefer, contact airmax1227 directly.
I would be happy to be an arbiter in minor cases. It is even more important in extreme cases-if you don't feel like coming to the site specifically because of someone's treatment of you. If someone is harassing you, odds are they are doing it to other people as well. If the moderator doesn't know about it, this person will continue. But the more information he has, the easier it will be for him to help you.

That being said, this is a debate site. Toes will be stepped on, epic disagreements will be had, and pompous and/or sarcastic know-it-alls will be encountered. And in that sense, one should have a "thick skin." But there is certainly no tolerance for sexual harassment, incessant derogatory trolling, repeated and aggressive personal attacks, etc. This would be the line both YYW and I are referring to.

No member should openly attack another member in any way, especially if the member who attacks is targeting a younger member or a member of the opposite sex.

While the first one may have some merit to it, depending upon the age, how is the second one in any way relevant at all?

That's not about you. The member to whom it refers will know who he is, and why it's necessary to mention. It appalls me that this isn't universally ingrained as common sense, but for some but apparently it is not.

See page 5 of this thread for contextual clarification.

Edit.

Maybe it's my browser, but I'm only seeing four pages to that topic, not five. Sure you posted the right thread?

He probably meant 4....

Sorry, I hit the wrong key. Oyrus is right. It's page 4.

I must be blind. I read the page, but I'm not seeing the context you mentioned that would make saying what you said about insulting someone of the opposite sex being even MORE bad make sense. what makes insulting someone of the opposite sex worse than someone of the same sex? Why was that even worth mentioning?

I was talking about the older member going against the younger member thing. The gender thing is more about the individual people and what they can/are willing to handle, which is why I don't wish to debate this issue in principle -because it varies.
