I have recently completed a study (more like an investigation) into how one's beliefs play into who they vote for on DDO.

The question: How strongly does which party one agrees with before reading the debate (as stated on the vote itself) affect who one votes for?

Answer: overwhelmingly

Methodology: I did not choose debates randomly for vote analysis. Debates had to have a resolution that I deemed to be important enough for people to likely have an opinion prior to reading the debate. The debates also had to have someone mixed votes, with no side having more than 75% of the total votes (below a 6 point difference this didn't apply). I included all of the votes in a debate (up to two pages of votes). Please note that only votes where people indicated who they agreed with prior to reading the debate were counted. I did not record the exact number of debates, but it was more than 30.

Important: a vote was considered "pro" or "con" for whichever side was given more points. Votes without points were not counted.

The results
_____________________________________________________________
Agreed with Pro (prior) and voted for Pro : 100
Agreed with Pro (prior) and voted for Con: 20
80.64% of people who agreed with pro voted for pro
51.2% of total votes counted were for pro
____________________________________________________________
Agreed with Con (prior) and voted for Con: 98
Agreed with Con (prior) and voted for pro : 24
83.05% of people who agreed with con voted for con
48.8% of total votes counted were for con

Correction:

Percent of people who agreed with pro who voted for pro: 83.33%

The confusion was caused by mixing up the division grids (I divided pro votes by pro wins + con votes for pro and vice versa)

That's only 30 I disagree. I vote on debates where I voted against my beliefs.

According to my research, that should be happening. So why is that a problem for its validity?

You have only done 30 some odd debates and the average person on here has done more then 30 debates. Just ask juggle for the info then convay it.

I actually find my sample quite representative; about half voted for con and half voted for pro. A larger sample would be better, but I believe that my evidence shows a strong correlation.

This isn't too surprising. While we never really had numbers on it, I doubt that anyone didn't believe that this was the case.

Some people I spoke with were completely blind to the fact, actually.

I never disputed bias what I'm saying is that I doubt the percentages are that high.

You could just ask juggle and they'll tell you.

Not necessarily. I don't know if they have that information.

It's actually an interesting question. I would like to see what the numbers are over the past few years. Of course many voters don't check the agreed with before or after boxes so it would not be completely accurate, but close enough.
