Hey DDO,

So I'd like to begin the next official DDO tournament, but this time I'd like to do things a bit differently. The last two official tournaments were fairly large, and because of this took place over a significant amount of time. So instead of doing the same, this time I would like to do things a bit differently by having 4 separate and smaller tournaments of 8 members each.

2 of these tournaments will be conventional rules and format. 1 will be a beginners tournament, and 1 will use jury voting.

After these 4 tournaments have concluded we will have done a total of 6. Following these I would like to do 2 more, so that following those we can have the 8 tournament winners face off in a tournament of tournament champions. All tournament winner have their names placed in the DDO tournament winners thread in the misc forums. I'd then like to see these done regularly and be moderated by any members who are willing. I'd like to thank Lannan13, 1devilsadvocate, 16kadams, and cybertron1998 for moderating these 4 tournaments.

All four of these tournaments will follow conventional rules. 4 rounds, 1st round acceptance. 8k character maximum. 72 hour posting times. 1 week voting period. RFD required.

All match-ups will be based on ELO rankings, highest versus lowest, in a set tournament bracket.

The beginners tournament will not have very specific rules regarding who is a beginner, but I trust members recognize the spirit of what is intended. If you are a new member, or have done very few debates and would like to work on your debating skills with members of similar experience, you are qualified. If you believe you fit into a grey area, sign up for one of the other tournaments or contact 16kAdams to see if you qualify for the tournament.

The jury voting tournament will feature sign ups for 5 jurors. Any members are welcome to sign up to be a juror (except for those taking place as debaters in the tournament), but should be aware their vote will be scrutinized for its quality. Jurors are required to vote within 5 days of the debate concluding (2 days before the voting deadline) so that I can adjust the points to favor their choice, should non-jury voters turn the point results to the losing side.

Members are welcome to sign up for more than one of these tournaments if enough time has passed (give it at least a few days) and spots are still open. Moderators are also welcome to sign up for any of the tournaments they are not moderating.

.....

If members or participants have any questions they should feel free to ask in the thread, by contacting the moderator of the tournament they are in, or by contacting me.

Copy and paste everything below this line and add your name to the tournament you wish to join. Following sign-ups a new thread will be created for each individual tournament.

Hey lookie there ^ larztheloser said something in the forums :O *shock and awe* I would join this competition without second thought, except halfway through the comp, I am going to have exams, so I might err on the side of caution here. I hope no one will be too negatively affected by the absence of my brilliant radiance to continue on living.

haha is that a serious complaint? I really didn't want to make it anymore complex than it already may appear to be. It seems the best chance of success these things have is too keep it simple.

I guess we could have done an "experienced" one, or ELO score of X+ only one, or a Non-US members only one, or a Female only one, or some kind of themed one, (With religion, politics, entertainment or whatever debates) but as I said I didn't want to make it anymore complex in this case. Following these we can change it up a bit, and I hope you'll share your suggestions.

I'm not saying you've run out of ideas for tournaments. I mean, I might as well make a tournament for people called "Larz" so I can win something. But what would be the point?

I guess it comes back to what I said before - there are too many tournaments here. I mean, there's no technical reason the World Debating Championships, or even the Olympics, don't happen once every month or so, but there's really no reason for it. At least merge the two tourneys that are EXACTLY the same into one. What possible reason is there to have two?

Ill be a jury voter. I don't think I have much time to seriously debate something (except for those of you who I've already promised to debate). I can certainly vote though.

Personally, I'd like to see a tournament for people who have a 100% win ratio. I doubt many would want to participate in it, though, because it would guarantee that most of them break their winning streak.

I was wondering this as well.

And the framework is confusing. I would though, like to be a debater in this tournament, provided we can choose our topics.

That's what I'm expecting and that would be fine. If it were random topics though, I doubt I'd be able to put any effort into either defending positions I'm against or topics I have no interest/knowledge in.

The juror thing is definitely interesting though.

Are these going to be real resolutions, like philosophical or political?

Resolutions are determined by the debaters in the allotted time limit (to be provided to participants following a completion of the tournaments sign-up period and match making). If the debaters have not chosen a resolution in that time limit, a random resolution will be decided upon by myself and the 4 moderators. If following that, within the new time limit, the debate has not been challenged and accepted, the member with the higher ELO will have FF'd by default.
