Well, I've been gone for a few months, but I think I might come back. I don't want to spend any real time on deciding why I left, so to put it quickly: I was disillusioned with the site when it comes to improving debating skills instead of simply appealing to the demographic of people who came on this site. In other words, it taught "cheat codes" to get more votes here, than improving virtues of debating for my own experience.

However, now I think that was because my approach to the site was somewhat wrong. I went thinking more votes = better debater, when in actual fact it came a lot down to who was voting. Those who voted were rarely non-partisan, and rarer still had consistent criteria. Moreover, while the site somewhat improved my communication skills, it plateaued, and I didn't keep trying to improve. Now, I think for others the site is extremely useful to teach others how to debate and be concise - it did for me. However, it only goes so far.

Now, I have came back because I think I have a way of utilising my time on this site in a way that actually improves my debating. Instead of doing written debates each time of 8000 characters (I assume that this is still the limit and common debate length) three times over, I'm instead going to try and commit to each debate in a video format. This way I improve everything, including communication, public speaking, and body language as well as just argumentation and structure. Seeing as arguments are sold or killed depending on these aspects, I am going to work on them. Of course, this would be told to the opponent of the debate before accepting to check if it is OK, and then still keeping to a limit of time speaking.

My major focus of making this post though is this: if anyone wants to challenge myself to a video debate, or a debate entirely, please send me a private message. I'm really wanting to try this out and see if it works. Thank you for reading, and I'll try and clear up any issues below.

wb. :)

I agree with you that the nature of the voting here does not convey the significance that one would think it does. I also agree that it helps with cutting arguments down in a concise manner and communication skills and all that.

My conclusion on the voting was that the debating process catalyzes discussion, and the voting process inhibits discussion by making people too invested in their vote (and all the silly politicking etc). I'm trying out a "no voting" debate atm to see how it works out. I am optimistic.

I hate it when people ask this question to people with a perfectly sizable post count. It's not like they're unknown.

Obviously you're the weird one who somehow never ran into them.

I was wary of this becoming an "attention whoring" topic here. That's why I tried to make sure the main principle of the message was that I am looking to do live video debates. I am for example planning one with Zaradi now as a result. So hopefully that ameliorates the tension and clarifies any issues.

I tend to do that whenever someone makes an announcement of their return/leaving. I know who S_H is.

And I am weird. We can be weird together though ;)

No, you're supposed to say "Doctor Who"? Preferably in a dalek-like voice.
