Quit doing debates that take so long to read.

I understand the argument that you want to have plenty of space to make yourself clear, but even a complicated argument can be made concisely if a skilled debater is making the argument.

I read this debate not too long ago [ https://www.debate.org... ] and it managed to do this rather well. I read through it quickly but still got to see a lot of clash happen.

If we have debates that aren't homework to read, then people will want to read them.

It has been suggested before. Some people actually do it.

However, some people are delusioned to think that long arguments = a better chance to win. Also if your opponent does 8000 characters, and you only do 4,000, it is likely that you aren't hitting all his points.

If both people were compatible it would be okay.

People could just change the character limit to 4,000 characters as the instigators of the debate.

I actually did a study of this one time and found that shorter debates due get substantially more votes then longer ones...

I'm not sure what the character limits were in the debates I referenced earlier, but either way they didn't use that much space. I think limiting characters to, say, 3000 per debate and and focusing on one or two arguments would be better than the current model.

I myself don't instigate debates with more than 4000 characters.

I think there's a reason for that too!

Eh. I still am a supporter of longer debates.

Sure, I have only like 50 votes to my name, but that's because I kind of turned into a forum warrior on DDO after the first week or so on DDO.
