Okay, so it's a while now since Charlie Danger announced he was organising a video rap battle tournament here on DDO. I was really looking forward to checking out Chuckie D's tourney but as MC Danger appears to have possibly been banned and anyway abandoned the site, I've decided to attempt to host it myself, primarilly for my own amusement.

So this is:

The DDO Lyrical Throwdown (Video Rap Battle Debate Tournament).

I've noticed that there have been loads of the rap lyric battles on here recently and while I really enjoy those, I believe a rap battle should involve some actual rapping and competitors will have to paste a link to a recording of them rapping. If people don't want to show their faces I can understand this. Audio only vids are acceptable but may leave you at a disadvantage.

I will post some more rules and guide lines soon (suggestions welcome) along with my suggested paradigm for voting. First I want to see who's actually interested in getting involved.

I'm hoping those who were up for the first tourney are still down (L, Dave, Vi, I'm counting on you guys to make this an awesome contest, Cody I can't wait to hear the fascist MC!) as well as some new faces (Koopin? Sylux?) and perhaps even some other established users might be willing to try this out in the spirit of fun (I reckon Nags has some bars in him lol, who else? Ragnar?). Plus Geo and Leafrod, I'm calling you out!

I'm being ambitious to start with and hoping for 16. I've included entrants for Charlie's tourney with ?s.

Probably not, for a number of reasons. See http://www.debate.org... but also if I'm organising it, that will be time consuming enough plus I want to remain impartial as a judge.

C'mon Cody!

I'm gonna leave places open over Christmas and start the competition with however many we've got in early January, even if I have to develop some bizarre system of qualifiers and knockouts to cope with an odd number.

l:( It is a shame to be taking Koopin and Cody off the list (especially Cody!) Leet, if all thats stopping you is technology then just a camera phone will do, or even just a mic.

I hope nobody takes this overly seriously and that everyone enters in a spirit of fun.

Contrary to my liberal socialist leanings, I'm going to be slightly authoritarian in my moderation and judging of these battles. I want to let the voters decide the winners but I am going to have the final say if I think the votes don't reflect the true result.

I may possibly appoint a co-judge. In this case, My co-judge and myself will both provide an RFD and a decision, the result of public voting will also be considered as one vote. The competitor with the best result from these three will be the winner of the battle. Hope that makes sense.

Voters are of course free to vote using whatever criteria they see fit but this is my suggested format for reinterpreting the vote categories for these battles. All of these categories are quite broad and cover several aspects.

Argument = Lyrics. 3 pts.

This covers the actual lyrical content and meaning of what is being rapped as well as the way the verse is constructed. Does it make sense? Is it relevant? Is it witty? Is it creative and original? Does it use imagery and poetic devices like metaphor and alliteration? Are the rhymes consistent? Are rhymes just one syllable at the end of a line or are there intricate and multi-syllabic (feminine) rhymes within every bar? Extra kudos will also be given to genuine freestyle (improvised lyrics) attempts.

Sources = Flow 2 pts.

This includes the general vocal delivery and performance, the rhythms in which the lyrics are used, the overall tone of the voice and the way tones and textures are used as well as the timing which is harder to judge without a beat or backing track (people will get some props from me just for attempting to ride a beat, especially if they pull it off well).
When considering the flow of a contestant consider the complexity of rhythms they use, is it simple back and forth nursery rhyme chanting or is it more creative in it's variation and complexity or even it's sparse simplicity. Also listen to how expressive the voice is, does it rise and fall with a melodic pattern or is it a dull monotone? How are rhythm and tone used for emphasis?

Spelling and grammar = Presentation 1 pt.

How well were battle rounds presented? Did the competitor seem confident? Was the video and audio quality acceptable? Did one competitor make the extra effort of rapping to a beat? Were editing techniques, special effects, costume, theatrical props or drama used in amusing or cool ways? Were the words clear and audible?

Conduct 1 pt.

Obviously insults are standard for rap battles and profanity is permitted (though not encouraged) in this competition but the conduct vote should be reserved for crossing a line into bullying. I'd like to see moms, girlfriends, kids etc. kept out of this too if possible. Mentioning race or cultural stereotypes is fine, derogatory racial epithets or ridiculing religious beliefs is not.
Assuming noone bes an arse, this category should go to the one with the most/best disses.

I have a prize for the winner. I will be putting out a mixtape soon through my record label Cacoteo Records. The winner (depending on quality of performance, and if logistics allow) will have a 16 bar featuring on one of the tracks if they opt to be featured.

To be honest, i'm probably not extremely qualified. I know quite a bit of poetry, but not much rap. I am interested, but if you can find someone better, by all means, sign him up.
I'll get by with a little help from my friends.

I actually already asked Mangani before I posted about the possibility of a co-judge and he has now confirmed but thanks for the interest anyway dude. Fancy taking part?

A few ideas:

1. Aside from Mangani, who's going to judge? I'm cool with feverish being the only other judge, but was unsure if that would fly with everyone if he's going to be participating too. Maybe those who aren't participating can offer an extra hand in judging. I'd like to see LeafRod man up and participate, but if he's not going to, then I'd nominate him to judge along with Leethal (who I think should just go out and buy a $20 webcam and stop being a puss lol :p).

2. I don't remember all of them, but I feel like there were a few ideas thrown around back when Danger was gonna host this regarding themes and whatnot. For instance, in addition to straight up battles, maybe there might be themed battles too. It could either be about a certain issue, supposed to feature key elements, etc. I know SnellD and I were gonna rap and have 1 verse be about us, 1 verse about our opponent, etc. Right now Leethal and I are doing a pop culture rap battle :) Anyway it's just an idea -- We might wanna leave it open and not stifle creativity or structure it too much, or maybe have the rappers decide per battle. I dunno.

3. Is it double elimination? That's what I'd recommend. I'm also curious to see how we'd pick our opponents or if they're handed out. I guess I'll just wait for all of the details haha I'm excited.

I'll give it some thought whether to have more judges (I'm not planning on competing by the way, though I will quite possibly battle the winner for fun). At the moment I'm thinking a panel of 3: Myself, Mangani and the actual votes cast on the debate itself. I think this will be interesting as we both know our shiz but disagree on a lot of stuff and the votes of the other site members will also carry some weight.

Leafrod was my second choice for co-judge and Leet would be cool too but I'd much rather see them compete. :)

Yeah I think leaving that flexible and up to the debaters is best. Topics are a great idea but I don't think it would be fair for me to hand them out.
One other thing I was considering was allowing people to use the final debate round to critique their opponents raps and explain why they should have won, but maybe that should be kept to the comments section.

3. Is it double elimination? That's what I'd recommend. I'm also curious to see how we'd pick our opponents or if they're handed out. I guess I'll just wait for all of the details haha I'm excited.

Depends on how many people sign up I guess. I don't want it to be too drawn out. If we can get 16, then just straight knockouts but I'll bear the double elimination in mind if we have fewer entries.

I think the battles should be left pretty open as well. Most of you have already seen my judging criteria for raps, so that should be a heads up if you know I'm 33% of the vote. Other than what the judges expect I think they should just have creative freedom though. It would be good to have either the third judge or the votes cast. Two judges doesn't seem enough on anything.

I think choosing topics will add an unfair element to a rap battle that may defeat the purpose of a rap battle, like influencing the voters more with what's said about the topic than the actual rapping. The openness will also challenge creativity more than just being given a topic.

I don't think one rapper's critique of the other's matters much outside of the rap battle. It's like I always tell dudes that want to diss me on Hip Hop forums- put that ish on wax!

I agree about the double elimination. If 8, then yeah, probably. But 16? Naw that would take too long. But then, if everyone is willing to have that long of a rap battle, why not, right?
