Imagine this. You've never heard of DDO. You never created an account, you've never read a debate on here, and you've never posted on these forums.

Would your life have been different?

I think mine is fundamentally different because of DDO, because I've learned so much. When I first started out on this site, I didn't know anything about politics, and I was a pretentious brat, too. I still don't know too much, but I like to think I've become less pretentious and mean spirited because of this site. Moreover, I've become interested in myriad topics I had never even really considered before--philosophy, psychology, religious debate for example--and it's made me a more evenly rounded individual.

Through everything I've learned on here, I would dare say my personality and mindset have changed, too. My entire worldview has been altered. I question things more. I think longer and harder about problems I face in life on a detailed basis. I notice more details.

And through all this, I would even say I've become a happier person because of it. I can see things more clearly now, and articulate my thoughts and ideas to other people, I've had so much practice. And I can absorb more in my studies, and really learn and understand the concepts.

I love you guys, I thought I should let you know. I really, really do.

To be honest I don't think I've changed one bit since I found this site. Don't get me wrong, I've learned a LOT of stuff I didn't know, but as far as the things you mentioned (less mean-spirited, less pretencious, analyse things more etc.), I'd like to think I had all that stuff pretty well worked out years before I came here.

The major change to my life is that it gives me something to do at times when I otherwise would have been bored and I've met a lot of cool, intelligent people I otherwise wouldn't have met. This is probably the first site I've ever felt a "part of", if you'll excuse the PoeJoe-esque sentimentality. :D The site rules.

My life wouldn't be different as I rarely debate on here anyway. I mostly just use it to relax and to have intelligent discussions with people, something that I tend to only occassionally get anywhere else.

Actually, I came to this site as an LD debater, looking to see if I could find anyone "dumb enough" to post their cases online, so I could know what kind of arguments other people were coming up with, so that I could then begin thinking up ways to refute them. I won't lie when I say that I initially thought very little of this site. Over time, however, as I debated (and eventually moved into the forums), I gained a lot of respect for the way things worked around here, and, like PoeJoe, I lost a lot of the pretentiousness and snobbery with which I had arrived. The site has certainly made me a far better debater, as well as opening my eyes to a lot of concepts and philosophies that I've never really discussed before. Example: I've never met anyone like Ragnar in the real world, though, from what I've read, I assume that no one else has, either. ;)

One other important change. I came to DDO an apathetic moderate. Abortion? Don't care, not getting one. Gay marriage? Don't care, not gay. And so on, of course. Considering the nature of most people on this website, one would assume that I would have been molded into either a liberal or a libertarian. Something along those lines; however, I ended up finding far more comfort in noocratic "fascism", which puts me at odds with basically everyone.

Overall, I would say that DDO helped me to discover myself politically and philosophically, and it helped me to reshape myself psychologically. I don't maintain a super-sentimental connection to the website like PoeJoe does, but I'm constantly reminded of the important role it plays (and has played) in my life.

Oh, yeah. I can totally relate to that.

When I first joined this site, I think I was interested more in being perceived as "smart" and "controversial." Mostly, I talked about politics with my friends for shock value: "Oh, look at the 14-year-old little sh*t. He's talking about important stuff. Let's pay attention to him."

Over time, though, I read more. I used to know even less than I do now, and it was on this faulty basis that I structured my primitive beliefs. I used to be a moderate liberal, but have since shifted more and more left.

I don't maintain a super-sentimental connection to the website like PoeJoe does,

>_>

DDO made me discover Atheism. I never really bought the Catholic hogwash dogma and always challenged it e.g. "How the hell could Jesus be God and vica versa?". I never really identified myself as an Atheist until I got into the forums. I quickly saw the fact most religions are founded on bad logic. SO, an Atheist I became.
