I am very interested in organising and participating in a video rap battle tournament.

8 people strictly, done in a loss means elimination format.

Everyone is free to vote, but I'll also be looking for 3 judges who will vote for one rap and between them, decide the winner.

To make it slightly more interesting, competitors will supply 3 two-word combinations (like "silver tentacles" or "juicy aluminium") that must be used by their opponent. To prevent people using words like otolaryngology, the maximum syllables allowed will be 4 per word, for a maximum of 8 per two-word combination.

Debates will be formatted as follows; one of the two battlers will be chosen to go forth (this will be decided randomly by the judges). The person who is going second will instigate the debate and supply their 3 two-word combinations. The challenger will then have 3 days to write, practice and record their rap, which they will embed in their 1st round, along with their 3 two-word combinations.

Videos must be uploaded to YouTube, so they can be embedded in the debate round.

SERIOUS PARTICIPANTS ONLY! As this debate requires more effort than usual debates, it would be horribly disappointing for someone to prepare their rap and then have their opponent forfeit.

I did one of these last year that lickdafoot straight dominated. It wasnt as successful as the one prior to that with danielle geo ferverish untitled entity panda etc but it was still fun. I am definitely in. Also ping larztheloser he is great.

Question: can we do epic rap battles of history themed raps? That would be fun.

Well, alright, I'll compete. Bring it on.

Question though: how many rounds are there in each battle?

Only 1 rap; one person goes first and one responds.

As much as I like those, I think it limits the potential creativity one can have if they have to stick strictly to a theme and probably increases the chance people will forfeit; I doubt those videos are done within 3 days. If more people will compete if that's the case, I'm open to changing it though.

Hmm... seems like the responder has a bit of an advantage in that case. Oh well, I'll give it a shot anyway.

Yes, the responder does have an advantage. However, that's going to be the case regardless of how many rounds you have.

I'm trying to minimise the amount of content that must be produced per battle.

But the issue is much reduced. The problem I see is that one side can attack the other person's rap, while the other side can't. With at least 2 rounds that problem is eliminated.

Never mind though, I suppose we do want this to finish within a reasonable timeframe so it's probably a good idea.

Obviously, but I'm sure the judges can take that into account. Also, that's only going to be a problem during the first round as from then on, you can play off your opponents previous battles.

Contender always has the last word. Just make sure if you are pro, You lay it on them hard in the first round. The one thing I like about this rule is that having to make less videos means less of a chance people will forfeit, but I personally wouldn't mind at least two responses per round.

I have no problem with the last word. I do have a bit of a problem with one side being able to do any rebuttal at all but the other not. I suspect as the tournament progresses the contenders will reference things in earlier videos that will make it hard for people to vote who haven't seen them all. But if it means less forfeits I'm happy.

I can't really dis-agree with you here. In any real rap battle, the entire point is to base your raps off of another persons raps, making fun of their rhythm, flow, lyrics, etc. just cross your fingers and hope you are not pro lol

Well, one solution would be for the final to be a 2 round battle?

If enough participants want the battles to be two rounds each, I will change it.
I just want to do this!
If it falls through, I might just go about finding people to battle and doing it outside the tournament structure.

The problem with this being a video tournament (the best kind IMO) is that it is really hard to generate activity and interest. Most people are camera shy, or have 1 of a million other excuses on why not to do it. In my last vid tournament, I had to rock it with like 4 people.

If it's only 4 people we could totally rock it with a round robin.

I suppose we could. We will see what happens.
