I've been asked by Mikal to start this topic and at first, I didn't want to because I remember so little and come back so infrequently. But I think this is a good opportunity to give what I can to the new generation and maybe fill in the holes of my memory and absence.

When I first joined, it was many, many years ago. DDO didn't even exist. This was called "Debate.com" from what I remember. It had a yellow banner, and the only thing you could do was create and accept debates.

It was like the wild west. The voting was 1 point, pro or con. There were no forums, or private messages, so the people got to know each other through debates and...I think...there was a comment section. I'm not sure, I don't remember.

It was utter lawlessness. Debates sprung up like weeds. I would take on 5 a day, quick debates where I would take advantage of semantic arguments. They went by quickly, because they were only 3 rounds, I believe. I don't recall now.

No one debated with any format, it was all rhetorical. There was no source citing. Those who really knew what they were doing would start using simple debate terminology like "Resolution" or "Logical Fallacy".

From the crowd, active members started to arise. There were many, but the ones I interacted with most were Yraelz, LogicalMaster, and Beem0r due to sheer quantity. I copied their debate tactics and watched them carefully, learning how to debate properly and win properly instead of just relying on trickery.

Those were good times, VERY good times. Lawless times though, and eventually, things started to change. The more respectable debaters started to question and petition for change. The concern was that too many people were spending their single vote on who they agreed with instead of who was the better debater.

More story another time, but...yeah...

If members wants to compile a non-satirical version of DDO history (and I strongly encourage some members to do this - I'd even help with the project) I'd happily sticky it somewhere.

Go vote on one of my debates. I'm not that smart, so it'll probably be an easy decision.

I would like to be part of this, one because it interests me and I think it's a great idea, and also I may be able to add some input to certain times when I was particularly active.

Hey guys, more story today for whoever is interested.

I forgot to mention that the lawlessness and chaos was due to the fact that all voting was completely anonymous. The site was rife with duplicate accounts created for the purpose of voting up and voting down. This, coupled with the fact that there was only 1 vote per person at the time, led to a growing movement of debaters who clamored for fairness.

The population was starting to divide. Creation vs Evolution, Atheist vs Theist, Democrat vs Republican, Conservative vs Liberal, even Trolls began to emerge to stake their claim over this new society.

It was during this time that a forum appeared, along with a new rubric that developed into the 7 point system we know today. This, along with any other modification, was the result of the top debaters harassing the initial site owners over the lack of voting integrity.

The debate challenges, which were so prominent before, were starting to dwindle down. There became a noticeable difference between the good and the average debaters, unlike what we have today. This "class gap" would eventually become the spark of what I would call the greatest conflict in the history of this site, though almost none of you know it.

This conflict is what gave all of you the things many of you may take for granted, like reasons for votes, the removal of voter anonymity, and the widespread acceptability of forum topics that allow you to request others to vote on unvoted debates.

I remember that conflict because I lost many, many, many of my friends on this site, and also because a huge portion of it was my fault.
