I think someone had to say it, so I'll take one for the team in pointing this out.

Over the past, let's say week, there has been a nearly uncontrollable flurry of utterly stupid threads -- I'm attacking the threads, not the individuals posting them, though I presently am not too thrilled with those people, obviously. I think it's about time that we call attention to these threads in an attempt to figure out how in the world we can fix this problem.

I could find specific posts, if need be, but for now, I'm going to go with thread titles, without calling attention directly to any particular user.

(1) "this is real art" in the art forum: http://www.debate.org...
(2) "http://www.paydayloansnocreditcheck24x7.co.uk...; in the economics forum (note: the first post was deleted, so jifpop was not the thread starter, but the topic still remains): http://www.debate.org...
(3) "should schools stop bullying" in the economics forum: http://www.debate.org...
(4) "should school lunches have restrictions" in the economics forum: http://www.debate.org...

And now we move into the utterly disgusting ones...

(5) "Should atheists be banned from this section" in the religion forum: http://www.debate.org...
(6) "Relegon is teh evilz!!!!!!1" in the religion forum: http://www.debate.org...
(7) "Atheism = communism" in the religion forum: http://www.debate.org...
(8) "Statist myths about US History" in the politics forum: http://www.debate.org...
(9) "Does the left have any intelligent arguments" in the politics forum: http://www.debate.org...
(10) "Hillary Clinton Caught Arming Al-Qaeda" in the politics forum: http://www.debate.org...
(11) "NO more Rides home for US astronauts" in the politics forum: http://www.debate.org...
(12) "A Protest" in the politics forum: http://www.debate.org...
(13) "Obama might get the banhammer" in the politics forum: http://www.debate.org...

Certainly there are more, and truly I'm just warming up, but you get the point.

So, why am I bringing attention to bad threads? Simple: because this has to stop. I was a vocal critique of the policy change, but to be perfectly frank, I think something on that level of enforcement is needed to counter nonsense like this which inherently makes the site look bad, drives people away, etc. I could point to specific lines, the endless stream of ad hominem attacks, and so forth, but that would take too long, and for goodness' sake, I don't have that kind of patience.

So, with all of that said....any ideas on how to address this?

What we can do would be counter them with good threads, but be weary that there are four types of threads: Good but unpopular, good and popular, bad and unpopular and finally... bad and popular. What we can't do is follow a system of censorship that would censor content based on their constructiveness or relevance. Mainly because DDO is a sh!thole to start with which lives on entertaining young and stupid teens with irrelevant material like "Frozen" and "Little Pony."

I think you're generally right, though I've always found that many people -- including people whom I consider intelligent, serious debaters -- will flock to the stupid threads, if only for the sensationalist aspect and short-term drama they provide, while ignoring decent, stimulating threads. I posted a thread on student loan debt the other day, for instance, and only one member responded -- yet the "should atheists be banned from this section" thread has more responses than I'd care to look up or acknowledge.
