How would a voting tournament be done? How do you get interest for one? How has this been done before?

I'd like to host one. Any advice?

The only way it could work, and for people to get ELO points for it, would be to put voters against one another on the same debate or debates (It could be for four different debates, spread out over five rounds), and post their RFD's in the round. Judges would judge the RFD's. Whoever wins could advance to face off someone else, with a new set of debates.

Ideally, you'd want debates that hadn't been voted on before and that only the competitors in the judging tournament could vote on. So, let's say you had four competitors:

ClassicRobert
Wylted
Whiteflame
Thett

You could select these debates, if all three were votable and only those people who were competitors could vote on them:

Rd. 1) Introduction, structure, format

Rd. 2) RFD's on this debate: http://www.debate.org...

Rd. 3) RFD's on this debate: http://www.debate.org...

Rd. 4) RFD's on this debate: http://www.debate.org...

And whoever, on balance, wrote better RFD's would be given the win (probably should be scored win/loss only) and that person would advance.

All competitors could evaluate the same debates, or not. There's some structural flexibility here, but that's how you'd do it.

To my knowledge, no. It wold be a novel thing for people to do, though, and because they'd be getting an ELO advantage, it would incentivize people to participate.

Of course, all of the votes on the tournament's debates will be "Pro had more convincing RFDs"

Ehh, that makes me kind of nervous. I think it'd be better to just have the resolution as "RFD Tournament: [Member X] v. [Member Y]." with very clear judges instructions.

Well we could always limit who the judges are. DDO does have that option now.

And I think we absolutely should, but who those judges ought to be is something we could discuss in PM's. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

Much obliged for the compliment, though I feel you'd be staunch competition. It'd be interesting to see who took part, and it could even be part of bladerunner's platform :P

Thanks, and it might. I'd like to see a couple of competing initiatives to get people to vote, and this could definitely be a good one.

One thing that could be really neat is to get a voting tournament running off a team debate tournament like I described here:

Oooh, now that would be interesting. We'd have unique evaluations of each debater and not just an evaluation of the sides. It would certainly involve more thought and effort, I think it could work if we could get the two going side-by-side, and even better, it would provide both quality judging and quality debates to judge.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I mean, the first one should probably be kept pretty small, but I can anticipate that it could turn into something spectacular -especially given that there are now voter leaderboards.

Agreed. It might give this site a shot of much needed adrenaline to have a dual tournament like this going on, especially since I think a lot of the top debaters/judges would be interested.

I say we get bladerunner in a PM with you and whiteflame and we start hashing out details.

Blade runner pretty much has to be down for this, given his platform.

Needless to say, I'd be interested. Sounds like a fun idea, and I like the format under discussion here.

You're one of the best voters on this site, so I'd like to see you participate for sure.

Much obliged for the compliment, though I feel you'd be staunch competition. It'd be interesting to see who took part, and it could even be part of bladerunner's platform :P

Thanks, and it might. I'd like to see a couple of competing initiatives to get people to vote, and this could definitely be a good one.

One thing that could be really neat is to get a voting tournament running off a team debate tournament like I described here:

http://www.debate.org...

Maybe we should gauge interest and see where it goes... or just start marketing the thing lol

I say we get bladerunner in a PM with you and whiteflame and we start hashing out details.

Blade runner pretty much has to be down for this, given his platform.

Right on! Let's do it!
