I don't use Reddit, but if I did, and you had done this there - I'd have given you gold.

BTW, what classes did you used to teach? Was it as a TA or Professor?

To say that I am both fastidious and pedantic is to be at once redundant and implicitly contradictory, because the only difference in their meaning is the connotation. To say that I am fastidious is to mean that I am detail oriented and that's a good thing, but to say that I'm pedantic is to say that I'm overly detail oriented and that's a bad thing.

Not necessarily.

Pedantic means to be ostentatious in one's learning.

Such as: Geogeer's addition to YYW's witty use of intellectuallyprimitive's list of words was pedantic.

Whereas Fastidious means excessively particular about details.

Such as: YYW was fastidious about Geogeer's pedantic addition to the witty use of words originally listed by intellectuallyprimitive.

Pedantic means to be ostentatious in one's learning.

Close, but to be more precise, to be pedantic is to be excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning. It's not to be ostentatious in one's learning.

Such as: Geogeer's addition to YYW's witty use of intellectuallyprimitive's list of words was pedantic.

Whereas Fastidious means excessively particular about details.

Very close, but more specifically, to be fastidious is to be very attentive to and concerned about accuracy and detail.

Such as: YYW was fastidious about Geogeer's pedantic addition to the witty use of words originally listed by intellectuallyprimitive.

There is no meaningful distinction between fastidious and pedantic, other than the connotative judgement implied by each word's use.

I will admit that the general usage is virtually identical, but I was just playing around so I wasn't really too concerned with making any particular point.
