Who has BOP in this debate? I think the burden should always be on the instigator.

Well, Con stated when instigating that the burden of proof was on Pro, and by accepting the debate, you accepted his terms.

But it does make sense in this case for the burden to be on Pro, the person affirming the resolution, or the positive statement that Assad should abdicate.

Regardless, ChosenWolff has violated the terms of the debate just by accepting. In the first round it was stated that the debate's acceptor must have been on the Site for at least three weeks. Unless ChosenWolff has had another account on Debate.org before (long live the DDO Revolution!), then he had no business accepting that debate.

I've actually been curious about this as well. Usually the BOP is put on Pro for making an affirmative statement, yet I've also have heard that, at times, the BOP is on the instigator.

Regardless of him (Con) claiming it belongs on one person over another, in this case, is he correct or is the BOP still on instigator?

Bop is on pro to prove that Assad should abdicate. Bop is on con to prove that he should not.

There BOP is presumptively on the person making a positive claim, advocating a change to the status quo, and/or affirming the topic. This presumption may change if otherwise specified in the debate.

If the resolution is something like: "Obi Wan vs. Mace Windu: Who is Cooler" then the BOP is typically/presumptively shared.

Whether or not someone instigates the debate, to me, has very little to do with the BOP.

In that specific round, Pro must prove that Al-Assad should abdicate. if Pro fails to do this, then I default Con.

Ultimately, Con does not need to prove anything. Con must simply prevent Pro from proving something.

Okay, thank you for the clarification.

I'm not going to let anybody in the debate, dictate how I determine BOP. I'd interpret the above debate to be shared BOP and I don't like letting the instigator weasel out of having any BOP by taking the con position.
