The amount of time it takes to play mafia is simply not worth any social/intellectual benefits it has. I find it absolutely incredible how many people on this site burn time on such a frivolous activity. It's just as bad as an addiction to video-games. Even for people who have an abundance of time, surely your time would be better spent learning or even socialising irl. I could understand a game once in awhile, but at the rate some people on here play, I find it hard to believe that they lead any kind of desirable life.

It had to be said.

I disagree. DDO is a community, and community-building exercises like mafia help strengthen those ties and foster a closer, friendly atmosphere. It also helps newer members find fun outlets for themselves on the site and slowly transition into life here, esp. if they feel a bit overwhelmed by debating. Many of the friends I have on this site I met through mafia, and I certainly must say that the time and effort I've put in has been well worth the investment.

Certainly, it isn't for everyone and some people may be a little too involved perhaps (like me, lol) but that isn't to say that it is a waste of time. It is a valuable aspect of this site that we should, IMO, retain and cherish.

Granted these games generally turn into us shooting sht and talking for hours (at least live mafia). I play forum maifa once in a blue moon because I don't want to invest the time into it.

Good way to build community as well.

DDO is a debating site first, and then a community (hence 'debate.org'). But you wouldn't think that, given the quality of the average debate, and given the number of inane games, like Mafia, that have become abundant.

Newer members shouldn't be wasting the site's resources playing these silly games. Instead, the should be practising debating skills, say in the opinions or polls section, so that they can be eased into debating.

Sure, you might think that all the time you've spent on Mafia has been worth it, but I guarantee that if you had spent your time on other, more productive endeavours, you'd be happier with your life.

We play every night normally. I still get in my Debates, Papers, Work, and social life XD. I love it, debating gets old fast. It is a way for the mods, the people on the site, and even random new people just to chill and talk.

Hell we have had some of these things turn into drinking games, and it was good times.

I disagree. DDO is a site centered around debating, but that does not mean that the community aspects of debate should somehow be shunted to the sidelines. Have you ever played mafia? If not, then it's not fair you to call it inane. It requires analysis, critical thinking, strategy, etc...all things that are necessary in a good debater as well.

Newer members shouldn't be wasting the site's resources playing these silly games. Instead, the should be practising debating skills, say in the opinions or polls section, so that they can be eased into debating.

As I just pointed out, mafia does give them an opportunity to practice skill sets involved in debate. But, I would also push back against any notion that debating well is the only way to contribute positively to this site--it's not. We have many productive members who engage nearly exclusively in mafia, but, through this, spread the benefits of their experience to newer players, enriching their experience.

Sure, you might think that all the time you've spent on Mafia has been worth it, but I guarantee that if you had spent your time on other, more productive endeavours, you'd be happier with your life.

No, I don't think that's true. I'm in the top 15 on the ELO board, top 10 on the poll leaderboard, I've post more in 9 months that some members have posted in 2 years in the forums, and I've enjoyed modding 22 games of mafia during my tenure on DDO. Mafia has enriched my experience on here just as much as debate, if not more.

This post seems very attack-oriented.

Ultimately, knowledge for its own sake is illogical. Why have knowledge if you value no other good in your life. For instance, what good is it to know how to win a debate, if you don't enjoy the debate or care about its outcome? Certainly, we may accrue knowledge, but we need to use it productively to have meaning. The point of mafia is to use knowledge and critical thinking to out-play the opponents. Thus, it serves not only as a means of entertainment, but also a way to keep those mental skills agile.

I'm not known for being passive, and I'm not about to apologise for that.

Ultimately, knowledge for its own sake is illogical. Why have knowledge if you value no other good in your life.

Acquiring knowledge is the best way to generate positive affect. Sure, as an end in itself, it's "illogical", but that doesn't mean it is not the greatest treasure. Other 'goods' will probably come from knowledge

For instance, what good is it to know how to win a debate, if you don't enjoy the debate or care about its outcome? Certainly, we may accrue knowledge, but we need to use it productively to have meaning.

I agree.

I never said Mafia served no purpose. I said that it was a waste of time, in regards to being able to better spend your time with more productive, fulfilling endeavours. The need for such primitive 'entertainment' is a weakness in character, and it would be best if you rid yourself of it.

Its a entertainment game. Not everything has to be a tedious pursuit for knowledge and wisdom.

Knowledge is the greatest treasure. Your pointless games are for the weak-willed.

This post seems very attack-oriented.

I'm not known for being passive, and I'm not about to apologise for that.

I never suggested you should apologize. However, being so aggressive oftentimes prevents you from seeing and appreciating where other people are coming from because you get so caught up in defending your own POV.

Or perhaps the reason we value knowledge is because it helps us access other goods. In which case, knowledge is merely a means to an end. It is the end we value--the means is just our way of getting there. For example, if I am an artist, the canvas I value only insofar as it lets me paint, but, at the end of the day, I value and treasure the painting more.

For instance, what good is it to know how to win a debate, if you don't enjoy the debate or care about its outcome? Certainly, we may accrue knowledge, but we need to use it productively to have meaning.

I agree.

The point of mafia is to use knowledge and critical thinking to out-play the opponents. Thus, it serves not only as a means of entertainment, but also a way to keep those mental skills agile.

I never said Mafia served no purpose. I said that it was a waste of time, in regards to being able to better spend your time with more productive, fulfilling endeavours. The need for such primitive 'entertainment' is a weakness in character, and it would be best if you rid yourself of it.

That seems like a very medieval stance to take. Mafia is no more primitive than any other pastime, be it sports, chess, boardgames, etc. Such diversions are a necessary and enriching part of one's life--something we should hold onto vice divest ourselves of.
