Curious what policies other members take on it? My policies are as follows...

Avoiding Accidental Plagiarism
There are only three strict rules on this:
1. If you copy/paste anything, put "quotation marks" around it, and provide a link.
2. If paraphrasing (putting what they said into your own words), still provide a link.
3. If no link is available, still give credit. Example: "Descartes put it best with his we think therefore we are."
Links need not be sourced to any academic standard, just a URL is ideal at DDO.

Author consent, does not dismiss plagiarism. Accidentally plagiarizing, does not dismiss plagiarism. It not being many words copied, does not dismiss plagiarism. Even common knowledge, does not dismiss plagiarism. Just follow the above rules.

Handling Plagiarism
As a debater, give the audience proof of the crime, then continue your case.

As a voter, automatically give conduct to the side which did not commit plagiarism (and state "plagiarism" in your RFD).
If more than a quarter of their argument that round is plagiarized, dismiss their whole round.

I agree with what you've said on avoiding accidental plagarism.

As for handling it, I also agree with your view on how to do it as a debater. I think some people spend too much time harping on it. It's worth bringing up at the time and reminding voters in the final round, that's about it.

As a voter, I add an addendum to what you've said. It's not so much based on the amount of the argument that's plagiarized to me, it's more about how integral it is to the case. If it's super important to their case, then it plays a larger part in the final decision. I may not completely dismiss the point, but it will get a lot less weight, as I'll essentially consider it an unwarranted argument of opinion. If it is relatively negligible, I probably will just give the conduct point and assess the cases as is.

I don't care about whether an ideology is "necessary" or not,
I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.

How do you dismiss someone's entire round? Do you act like it's a FF? If someone plagiarized over a quarter of their argument in the second round, then the debate continued on as normal, what would the difference be besides the loss of a conduct point?

Just wondering, thanks.

Handling Plagiarism
If Debater's argument was half - completely plagiarized, provide proof then force opponent into auto loss (round 1 rules would clearly state this). If Oppponent's argument was half plagiarized or less, provide evidence then dismiss all of Opponent's plagiarized argument and deduct conduct points from Opponent.

As a voter, automatically give conduct to the side which did not commit plagiarism (and state "plagiarism" in your RFD) or give an auto loss to the opponent if they plagiarized 50% or more of their argument.

Pretty much a forfeit. Like a forfeit it does not outright dismiss the rest of their argument, but their opponent is (hopefully) gaining ground. Very hard to get better than a tie at that point.

I remember one debate featuring Nonprophet, where he plagiarized about two-thirds of his material until the final round, and people voted in his favor anyway. As someone opposed to cheating, it was sicking to me.

I think CryptoXx has a good point about half of the material (as opposed to a mere quarter). Where to draw this line, is perhaps the main reason I started this thread.

Accidental plagiarism is forgivable, intentional plagiarism is not. As a voter, I'll evaluate that on a case by case basis.
