Look on the bright side. At least your country was smart enough to pawn its cr@p off on my country - and get us to pay for it at the same time:

Not long ago, there was a document leaked by Edward Snowden which detailed the methodology of how the NSA and the global intelligence community (including GCHQ) infiltrated online communities. I didn't post about it then, because I thought it was too conspiracy-theoryish. But I shared it with Bladerunner... and he and I sort of came to the conclusion that I wasn't just chasing shadows in fog.

This sort of details how that process works:

https://firstlook.org...

Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable. To see how extremist these programs are, just consider the tactics they boast of using to achieve those ends: "false flag operations" (posting material to the internet and falsely attributing it to someone else), fake victim blog posts (pretending to be a victim of the individual whose reputation they want to destroy), and posting "negative information" on various forums.

While all the components weren't there, there was a lot of anecdotal stuff that added up to a much bigger problem. That is not necessarily to say that the user was a GCHQ operative, or working for any governmental outfit... but the tactics and methods which this user was employing certainly mirrored a lot of stuff that was mentioned in the leaked documents. There are three reasons, however, that even though there was a considerable degree of methodological overlap, the available evidence is insufficient to prove what appeared to be going on.

The first is that counter intelligence is pretty intuitive. I think that almost anyone who put their mind to it can figure out how to integrate themselves into an online community and manipulate it to their own purposes. Second, how the NSA and GCHQ do their dirty work with online forum communities was leaked to the public. Even if their tactics are intuitive, someone else could be trying to do this acting on their own volition. Thirdly, DDO is fairly benign -insofar as the nature of its membership. There's really not a lot of "fringe" stuff going on here. There are some radical librarians, and some racist trolls... but most of DDO's members are high school and college aged students who want to discuss the big issues, and have rap battles. So, circumstantial parallels might appear to be more nefarious than they are -but they still exist.

There are, I think, two reasons why GCHQ would be on this website: (1) using DDO as a training ground to introduce operatives to online infiltration and (2) add it to the list of areas intended to control narratives online. In the past (like the 1960s), it was pretty easy for governments to control public perception. But now, with the internet, that task becomes at once infinitely more challenging and infinitely more necessary. This is not only the largest, but the best online debate site by far that's online and in that that's the case, it would make sense that government's would want to keep a watch in it -for the same reason that the FBI watched MLK in the 1960s. I don't think that's a bad thing per se, but it is something to be aware of.

I'm reluctant to even post this, though, for some reasons as well. First among them, I don't want to be written off as a conspiracy theorist. But in this day and age, it would be incredibly naive and myopic to think that DDO isn't being at least monitored -just like the rest of the internet. If I worked for GCHQ and I had an interest in controlling narratives and manipulating online perception, DDO would likewise be one of the first places that I sent my agents. The forum community is relatively free, and there is a really diverse -and also impressionable- lot on here. There is also not a lot at stake in using DDO for their own ends. This would be a fantastic place to train people to then go onto Stormfront or other websites that cater to fringe interests so that their agents would have some real-world experience doing the kinds of stuff that they would need to do.

Can you really trust reddit as a reliable source? Its like someone on 4chan claiming to have evidence that Barrack Obama is the son of Bin laden.
