So spaceking had a debate which gave me several ideas. I think the purpose of DDO should force people to become better debators. As of now, it gives people the opportunity to look up suggestions at the time they are debating, but it's not mandatory.

1st - We should get rid of the point system because anyone can fill it out in a rush and doesn't require much attention. That being said, debates should be judged on some kind of "fill out sheet" based on the following:

1) Burden of proof and terms: A good debate always defines terms and the burden of proof. That way no shifting burden of proof can be claimed and the debate has a common ground of understanding.

2) Arguments - There should be a logical set of axioms and either an inductive or deductive reasoning which follows. Most debates i see lack that kind of structure and explain generally how the logic works, not specifically how their arguments work.

3) Counters - Counter-arguments should also be judged by their effectiveness to refute the opponent's arguments.

4) Sources - I notice there's a "who used the most reliable sources" but it's not strictly forced on debators to use them. In a debate, you should be required to cite sources so that everyone is able to understand.

5) logical fallacies - Pointing out the logical fallacies of your opponents should also determine who wins and who has the best arguments.

6) A stricter reporting system - if we made these things the criteria for voting, i think it'd be alot harder to vote bomb and thus debates would be of better quality.

No. What needs to happen with respect to voting is the total abolition, or at least the change from default, of the old 7 point ballot in favor of the new winner take all ballot. Having multiple categories does nothing but open up the system for more abuse.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind. We should have the winner take all ballot but with a written response as a requirement.

I would take the suggestions more seriously, were they not from such a blatant votebomber. If this assessment of you is not true, please explain the conduct portion of your vote on spaceking's recent debate http://www.debate.org...

Sorry but even in this thread you state that you believe "voting doesn't require much attention." Someone who votes like you when it's already a fill out sheet of different categories, seems unlikely to vote any better with a different fill out sheet that does such novel things as replace sources with sources.

Yet another data point proving the general hypothesis that bad debaters make bad voters.
