Preface

Hello! With Mikal's Tier Tournament wrapping up, Blade and I have decided that it would be a good idea to start the next tier tournament series. This is an Official DDO Tournament, meaning that winners of each tier will be formally recognized here [http://www.debate.org...]

There are three tiers divided by ELO rankings. This tournament is sudden-death, meaning that 1 loss will knock you out of the tournament. If you are hoping to improve your skills or to test yourself, this is a great way to do it. Pairings will be determined on a high-low ranking also based on ELO.

Not for some people, lol. Many pseudo-scientists out there.

It does indeed.

Agreed. It would definitely be an entertaining debate for me to read.

I'd enjoy this one very much.

Me too. Though, this is one of those issues where it's very hard for me to see the opposing side.

33. Scotland should vote to become independent of the United Kingdom.

Whoever wants to do this debate better hurry up.

After the 18th, I'll switch it to "should have voted."

Where do you fall on separation of church and state?

It's something I haven't researched much at all but I'm sure I would come down on the Con side. If this were a few hundred years ago I would see some seriously powerful arguments for a state church--at the very least for organizational purposes but now it's probably obsolete.

Although it also depends what people mean by separation of church and state. I don't really have a problem with things that the Supreme Court has termed ceremonial deism--things like God's name being invoked in the pledge of allegiance. I don't think religion and public life should necessarily be as separated as some would like although it's not a very strong opinion of mine and I think E Pluribus Unum is an exponentially better motto for the US and everything we stand for than In God We Trust.

I've actually always been really interested in the interaction of older worldviews with a society that's left them behind. I think that's a natural result of my upbringing but that's a topic for another day

Depends on what is meant by separation of church and state. I'd tend to agree with what I assume is your position (Pro) but I can think of some moderately compelling reasons for some kind of weak form of ceremonial deism.

33. Scotland should vote to become independent of the United Kingdom.

I'm getting pretty excited for the election. It's getting surprisingly close now...

I can definitely see that. And I definitely have an interest in it too, but probably for very different reasons than you do.

10. The Church ought to be Separated from the State.

Yeah, I'd be Pro. I guess I can see some case for it; it reminds me of the pseudo-religion Robespierre and company instituted in Revolutionary France...

33. Scotland should vote to become independent of the United Kingdom.

Whoever wants to do this debate better hurry up.

After the 18th, I'll switch it to "should have voted."

Me too! I am just trying to think of the ramifications if the Yes Campaign wins.

If you signed up for the lower tier I'd put money on you making it to the finals.

Who's judging?

Open voting. Unfortunately, judges have a tendency to forget to vote. If you want to select judges for a debate and your opponent agrees with your list, then you can do that too.

Think I'm going to sit this one out. However, I will put it out there that I'll be happy to join pretty much any judge list, so just send me a nomination.
