Eh, that's harder to defend, lol. I only support it as the next best alternative.

Well, should be fun! See if whiteflame and Raisor will argue Pro. Someone suggested earlier that the four of you should do a team debate. I'm sure it'd be a hall of famer.

The Fool: Why do you think that It is harder to defend?

By harder to defend, do you mean it is more or less justifiable than some other form of "affirmative action", and/or that less people are sympathetic towards racial affirmative action then some other form?

Or perhaps you have another reason?

"The bud disappears when the blossom breaks through, and we might say that the former is refuted by the latter; in the same way when the fruit comes, the blossom may be explained to be a false form of the plant's existence, for the fruit appears as its true nature in place of the blossom. These stages are not merely differentiated; they supplant one another as being incompatible with one another." G. W. F. HEGEL

I personally think it's harder to defend than, say, affirmative action based on socioeconomic class because it keys in on the problem, which is lack of opportunity.

In many ways RoyLatham changed my mind about affirmative action. I'm not in favor of race based affirmative action, and I'm not especially sure I'm in favor of class based affirmative action at Ivy League schools if it means strapping underprivileged kids with astronomically high levels of student debt. Essentially, it's just too big of a risk -certainly for the university, but even more for students.

The bleeding heart in me wants to admit kids of all socioeconomic backgrounds, but there are huge problems associated with giving underprivileged kids opportunities that come in the form of double edged swords. It's just not pragmatic.
