New York City, New York:

The owner of the prominent brokerage firm Rationalist and Bookworm, Endarkened Rationalist was struck earlier this morning by a bullet from an Occupy Wall Street protester. Police are still investigating. He was 71. This reporter could not reach any family member for comment.

------------

Endark awoke. That, in itself was surprising. He felt light and...free somehow. As if the world perhaps was not so dark, as if his redemption was yet possible. A floaty feeling overcame him and he drifted slowly toward the light. He knew that should he reach it, everything would be perfect.

NOT FOR YOU said a booming voice.

Endark found himself facing the Almighty who, until a few minutes ago, he was sure did not exist. God existed not as a bearded skydaddy but as so much more than that--a being of indescribable beauty and glory. But also one of justice. Endark could feel both His love and His anger. His sorrow for the loss of one of His beloved children. There was no divine scales of cosmic justice. There was no hearing. Both parties involved knew what the verdict would be.

Endark sure hoped the annihilationists were right.

They weren't.

------------

There was no fire, only darkness. No pain, only emptiness. There was nothing. Nothing but Endarkened's thoughts.

It may have been years or it may have been only seconds. before the first voice was heard. A faint voice it was, and slightly familiar although Endark could not understand the words he said.

"Who...who are you?" Endark asked. There was no answer, only a continuation of the words. Over and over again they were said, getting louder and clearer each time as Endark felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. He felt as if he had lost everything, everything he had worked for. All of those years in the steel factory...wait, what? Endark had never worked at...Zaradi. The voice's name was Zaradi. The first sale Endark had ever made...he sold him $25,000 worth of penny stocks that promptly crashed as he knew they would.

Endark felt Zaradi's pain and anger when he realized he was scammed. That he had lost it all. He felt the horror at the realization that he took everything he had ever worked for and threw it away in one day.

"It was a deal!" Endark cried. "It may have been a bad thing to do, but it was a deal! Have mercy, it was all legal!" But Endark knew in his heart that legality does not equal morality.

Pain. This was pain that transcended anything that could be felt on a physical level but rather seeped into his very soul as the weight of Endarks guilt combined with the pain his victim felt...but there was more. Oh there was so much more.

Without Zaradi's pain losing any of its potency, another agony was added as a new voice was arrived. This pain was one of humiliation. That midget they had hired to wear a velcro suit so they could throw her like a dart onto a target; Endark felt her shame at selling herself in such a way, and understood her desperation. Poor debatability...why had he been so cruel? How had he not realized what he was doing?

Roylatham. The old man who's 401k they had snatched under him when he was mere months from retirement. Endark felt the bitterness as he realized he would now work until the day he died. That he would leave this world with nothing, and all because he had fallen for the sales pitch. He felt Roy's suffering as he explained to his wife what he had done, what had happened. Oh this was more than sympathy, no, Endark *was* Roy. And Zaradi. And Debatability. And..and who else now? Bsh1.

Poor Bsh1. Endark felt sorry for him even in the land of the living for what he had done. His ex partner that he cut out so he could have more for himself...but that was just capitalism, it was just how it worked! If he didn't read the documents that is not my fault! Endark knew this was a foolish defense however. He now knew how wrong he was as he became Bsh at that moment. As he felt the tears running down his cheeks, he tried to raise a hand to wipe them away only to find he could not. He had no body, no control he was only his victims at their moment of greatest suffering.

More and more voices were added. His first wife, Seventhprofessor, who he cheated on with Raisor. Oh God, the betrayal! But Endark couldn't speak. Couldn't cry out for help. He knew that no one, not even God could hear him here. Daltonian. Pots. Imabench. Airmax. The names went on and on, as did the pain. No matter how many more voices were added each one remained just as strong.

He was reminded of a quote from a book he had once read as a way to flatter the author before attempting to sell him stock.

"Our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future."-Somni-451.

How right she was. How right she was! This was to be his torment. And it went on, and on, and on. How long Endark didn't know but he realized time didn't matter here. Time was an illusion. This was forever.

Then it all stopped.

There was a light. Distant, but growing closer. An emotion he had forgotten about, hope, filled his heart.

But then he saw who it was coming for him. And his hope vanished.

"Hello Endark" Thett said with a smirk.

------------

Thett had been Endarks first great crime. As a young officer fresh out of West Point, when he was sent to Vietnam Endark did not like being treated like he knew nothing from the noncom in his unit, a grizzled WWII veteran named Thett with graying hair, a constant scowl on his face, and abs of steel. Despite it being a thoroughly modern war, Thett still carried and used a sword. Thett grew up in one of those old fashioned working class households that modernity has mostly stamped out by now--you know the kind, the kind with an Archie Bunker type patriarch and a work ethic as fiery as their Protestantism. This didn't mesh well with Endark.

It was during a firefight. No one would ever know. Endark shot Thett in the head with a pistol from behind. He told himself it was for his country. The men listened to this NCO over their commissioned officer! This kind of act was necessary for the war effort! But in his heart, Endark knew why he did it.

Thett had dared to question his authority. He had to pay.

------------

"Payback's a bitch, isn't it?" Thett said. He had been restored to his youthful vigor, his gray hair turned blonde and he was wearing a dark black eyepatch.

Endark felt the pain of the bullet. He heard Thett's last thought. After all that had happened, it ends like this. The irony.

Thett drew a pistol. The very same pistol, Endark noticed.

"Think about what you have seen here. Think about your choices".

Thett fired. It all went black.

------------

Endark found himself on a field in Vietnam, bullets flying all around and a pistol aimed squarely at Thetts head. He withdrew the gun.

It really is one of the best books ever written, and I think the best non-Harry Potter or Comic Book movie of the decade.

Zaradi, the real reason I'm glad you liked it is that liking Cloud Atlas is, I think, a really good test of character. Liking it says a lot about a person, because of how it's written and what it means.

Interview question when applying for a job: "did you like Cloud Atlas?"

I can see it now.
