I think we should have a debate tournament, of sorts, between the Social Democrats and the libertarians.

We would divide up into teams and debate various issues. Is anyone interested? We need issues to debate, however.

Here are a few ideas:
Minimum Wage
Social Security
FDA
Anarchy/Minarchy/Monarchy vs. Representative Democracy

I don't think there is too many social democrats on this site, to be honest. You might want to open up the field a bit.

Agreed. I would like to have someone represent Panarchy. There's also some Progressives and Paleo-Conservatives out there as well.

Hmm...as a Social Democrat I feel inclined to participate in this, but I'm still not sure. None of the suggested topics tend to be my strong point...

Consumer protection
Environmental issues
Exploitation of workers
Exploitation of the third world
Etc.

You know...stuff in our park.

Ah, the same reason I am hesitant of being labeled a capitalist.

Well, I wouldn't mind a name change if you could convince the others to debate under the banner "social liberal".

We could do a debate on "The Free Market does not adequately provide Consumer Protection and therefore government intervention is preferable". If you have better wording you could suggest it.

Well, we could just have several labels, for both sides, since I doubt some want to simply fall under the term "libertarian" as well. Just an idea.

Well I was actually thinking of getting a few topics and then having a 1-on-1 "official" debate for each topic with each side picking their debater for that topic.

So it's formal debate, but in the forums? Ok, cool.

I guess we could call you guys the Progressive/Social Democrat/Social Liberal/New Democrats.

I was aiming at an actual formal debate as I still haven't had one yet, but we could do it in the forums if that's the consensus.

We could do a debate on "The Free Market does not adequately provide Consumer Protection and therefore government intervention is preferable". If you have better wording you could suggest it.

One thing I like to do is to put the main idea in the title (e.g. "Exploitation of the third world") and then post the full resolution in the first line of the debate (e.g. "The government is justified in intervening in the free market with regards to exploitation of the third world").

In any case, I'd be fine with doing any of those topics.

What do you mean by exploitation of workers, precisely?

If this tournament ever took place, I'd probably be on the side of the Libertarians. The whole basis of something like this would really be a philosophical debate about the role of government, so your positions on these matters aren't even really relevant. It basically comes down to what you think the government should be responsible for, and who or what should make up the government.
