Has anyone else noticed that debate.org considers joshandr30 a "top debator"

And somehow I got on there too?

It used to be only for people who have a 90%+ percentile. Now they've lowered it to 80%+. It's been a while. I'm surprised you haven't noticed.

What does the "percentile" indicate anyways? I have a horrible Winning ratio, yet I seem to have a decent percentile, whatever that means.

That's because there are a lot of spam accounts-- accounts that have done nothing/only a few things. I agree; the "secret" formula is rather rad.

It seems it also factors in the pure number of debates you have had and the time you spent on debate.org?

Any clue on this PoeJoe?

Hey Debaters,

The "percentile" feature is calculated with a formula that takes into account the number of debates you have completed along with your win ratio. There might be some other little things tossed into the equation as well but I can't remember off the top of my head. What makes you think the "secret" formula is bad?

Well, from what I've noticed, the percentile seems to hinge on the AMOUNT of wins a debater has. It only gets technical when debaters are tied in terms of wins. There doesn't seem to be much of a "secret" though.

And personally, although I will agree that this method is flawed, every other method I've thought or have seen described by others is even more flawed when thinking beyond the immediate benefits of them.

Any formula that puts that guy on the top debaters list is a bad formula.

Its inadequate, as is the way points are calculated when you vote.

Who had the most convincing arguments should be given much more weight than spelling and grammar.

3 points = much more than 1 point
I think 'better sources' is given too many points, though. In a lot of debates, sources aren't even given, and someone ends up getting these free 2 points per voter by just having a link to a definition of a word or something.
I think, if anything, it should be 1 point. If someone _really_ thinks you had bad sources, then you probably won't win the 'more convincing arguments' points (since people are less likely to be convinced by evidence from junk sites).

Debates won should have a much higher effect in the standings than total debates.
Voting:
Conduct should be one point.
Spelling should be one point.
More convincing arguments should be three points.
Better sources should be one point.
If your opinion changed, three points should be added to the new person you agree with.
If your opinion went from neutral to one way, that way should get two points.
If one's opinion did not change, one point should be added.

How's that sound?

Sounded good til you got to the opinion changed part. Someone's opinion is not likely to be changed by a simple online debate, and such a scoring method would be easily abused by people who just simply vote across the board for one person but instead they lie about it.

I've noticed that since yesterday I've won two debates that were previously losses. I'm not thoroughly surprised by this, but I am quite disturbed to see that I jumped from ninth on the leaderboard to fifth. I think the leaderboard rankings are being manipulated.

In a perfect world it would be good, but not one where you have been vote bombed

If you're referring to the debates I've had with you, then that was most likely due to joshands vote bombing. As you can see, my win ratio went from 75% to 44% in a short period of time.
