Thett slammed the door to his cruiser shut, amazed with where the directions his tech gave him took him.

Standing in front of the Constable was a six story abandoned apartment building that had been slotted for renovations with a company that went bankrupt three months ago. A call coming from this dump shouldn't ever be happening. The fact that it did happen piqued Thett's curiosity.

Taking out his flashlight, Thett approached the entrance to the apartment complex, unsure of what he would find. Upon opening the door, however, Thett was relatively bummed that there wasn't anything in the lobby.

He blinked a few times, then reconsidered. There was literally nothing in the lobby. No chairs, no floor mats, not even a built-in countertop for the receptionist to sit behind. It was a blank slate room. Sure it was run-down and abandoned, but there would still at least be signs that there used to be things present, like wall hooks or bolts in the floors and walls.

But the room was empty. As empty as his own memory.

Thett was getting ready to chalk it up to an elaborate, over-the-top prank phone call when a projector screen dropped down from the ceiling. The lights, what little ambient light was soaking in through a barred window, dimmed as the make-shift theatre came to life. Images began to flicker on and off the screen.

A dreary swamp, filled with the carcasses of past ships who had met an unfortunate end. A man holding a cane-like weapon was fighting with a hunch-backed individual.

Thett recoiled as a headache began wracking his head, as images flooded his mind. He could see the man jumping between pieces of wrecked ships, going under the waves in a submersible vehicle. He could picture the smell of burning oil, the feel of the rain pressing against his being.

More importantly, he could see the fight clearly. Jumping between platforms, avoiding the blows of the other man while the cane consistently found its mark against the opposing skull, eventually causing the hunch-backed man to concede defeat.

The picture changed. A sprawling cityscape that had been long since left as a ghost of its former glory. The same man with the cane was in a scrap against a massive thug-like man who carried two machine guns like paperweights.

Thett gritted his teeth, putting a hand against his forehead to support himself as images continued their assault against his mind. He could see the American city clearly, how the corrupt gambling empire had brought the city to its knees, forcing those who didn"t want to live under the rule of a mobster to seek shelter elsewhere.

He could see that final fight, too; the whizzing of bullets flying all around, focusing special crystalline mirrors that amplified light energies into deadly beams. It was a game of cat and mouse, only this time the cat had two automatics.

The picture changed. A forest teeming with life and danger, the very air filled with darkness and mysticism. This same man with the cane was in a deadly game of "follow the leader" with a rather large woman, ducking and dodging black magic energy waves.

Thett groaned in physical pain as the waves of images refused to relent, pounding against his subconscious like a tsunami. He could feel the air around him, how it had felt"off was the only word that seemed to fit. He could see the tribal voodoo masks that littered the area, see the deformed farm animals that had been used in experimentation.

He remembered the last"he wanted to say "fight" but it seemed like the wrong word to use. It was more of a deranged game of "Simon Says", where the over-sized lady shot waves and waves of dark magic at him, and it was a test of reaction time. The cane would always meet her hide, however.

The picture changed. A range of snowy mountaintops, adorned with scattered shrines and temples. The occasional burst of color in the sky indicated the presence of fireworks. A final showdown with a large man lit up the night sky with forbidden flames.

Thett"s knees collapsed to the sheer weight of the pain in his head, forcing him down onto one knee. He could feel the biting cold against his skin, feel and hear the crunch of the snow underfoot. He could hear the soft roar of each individual firework, exploding overhead and coloring the night sky with bursts of colors before fading into the darkness.

He could also picture the final fight, as vividly as if it happened moments ago. It was a deadly dance, the heat from his flame-coated fists searing along Thett"s skin, dangerously close to impacting each and every time. But Thett"s cane was not to be denied, and even over this opponent Thett was victorious.

The picture changed. A tall mountain"no a tower constructed into a mountain. It was unlike the snowy mountain top of the previous image, rather cold and sharp with stone and magma. Above the entire scene a shadow gliding in the night sky, metallic eyes burning bright red with eternal, searing hatred.

Thett"s body finally gave way, falling entirely to the floor as he curled up into a ball, wanting, no begging, the images in his mind to leave him alone. He could imagine the Russian volcano in his mind, the treacherous ascent up the top of the mountain, filled with dangerous machinery and lava creatures. He even could see himself rescuing"someone"for once the images were hazy about the specifics"and becoming trapped because of his attempted heroism. He saw himself escape the trap, only to lose his cane and have to recover it, with help from"someone"again the images were hazy"so that he could be prepared for the final fight.

It all came down to this. Facing an eternal foe who"d live for generations, millennia, off of only pure, raw hatred for everything he was, to the point that his entire body, entire being, was replaced with metallic parts. Where flesh failed, steel and hate prevailed. The fight was long and hazardous, constantly on the brink of death. But he prevailed.
The images finally ceased, the projector turned off, and the lights returned. Thett remained prone, however, breathing heavily after the mental assault. He took a few seconds, seconds that stretched into minutes, that stretched into hours, to collect himself, to try to rationalize what he just saw, what he just witnessed, before picking himself up off the floor. Never had he had an attack on such a scale before, and this was clearly planned. Someone was trying to show him something. But who? And what?

Thett stuck around the scene for a little bit, searching for the projector to try and get some kind of insight as to what was going on. It took him a little while, but he finally managed to move aside a false panel in the wall, revealing the projector. Sitting next to the projector was a cardboard cutout of a raccoon face, black with white and blue trim, sitting there as if it were a calling card. Who was trying to call out to him, though?

Thett grabbed the cutout, sticking it in a back pocket before replacing the panel and walking out of the abandoned apartment complex. He"d have his tech run a check on it to see if it brought anything up. Besides, he had had enough of police work for the day; it was his day off, after all.

-----

"You picked a really nice restaurant, dear." Royal commented as a host escorted the couple to a table in the back of the restaurant.

Thett had chosen a rather high-scale restaurant to make reservations to, since he knew Royal enjoyed the finer things in life. As tough as she tried to look on the job, she had tastes for some of the more delicate things in life, and enjoyed dressing up for occasions. Thett didn"t mind her dressing up either: the red dress she chose to wear tonight accentuated the blue of her eyes just as much as they showcased the slender curve to her hips, with a small slit in the dress to give a teasing glimpse of her legs.

Thett pulled out a chair, like a true gentleman, allowing Royal to sit down before going to his own seat. I only pick the best for you. You should know this by now." Thett boasted, grinning in victory as a slight red hue coated her cheeks and a small, silly smile plastered her lips. She had picked up the menu to try and hide the features, but Thett knew her too well to think it was anything else.

"So how was work, dear? Worth going in on your day off?"

It was the question Thett had dreaded answering, because he didn"t want to answer it and worry her. His gaze drifted downwards and off to the side, avoiding eye contact to try and think of a decent response. "It was mostly paperwork, paperwork, and more boring paperwork to top it all off. So about an average day on the job." Thett replied, pushing the abusive powerpoint presentation, the calling card that he had dropped off with his tech to analyze, and the massive influx of images he had gotten out of his mind. He didn"t have a reason to worry her with all of it.

Royal didn"t seem convinced. "You look more tired than usual, though. Did anything happen?"

Thett sighed a little. Busted. "I might have had"a little bit of a headache." He said cautiously, seeing Royal"s face go from normal to worried in a heartbeat.
"A little? It"s the third headache you"ve had in three days. Was it a bad one?" Royal questioned, evidently worried.

Thett awkwardly chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck in a way to try and dismiss any worry. "It might have been"kind of bad. Nothing too major to worry about though"" Thett tried to dismiss, but a baleful glare from Royal quickly killed that route of thought. "Okay, maybe it was bigger than that"still not super bad though"" Thett relented slightly, trying to satisfy her. The glare remained. ""the biggest one yet"?" Thett finally confessed. Royal"s look softened.

"Dear, have you considered going to see someone about these headaches you"re getting? The frequency and intensity isn"t normal." Royal asked, only getting a shrug in response.

"It"s not anything Advil or one of your amazing massages can"t fix." Thett grinned, only getting an eye roll from Royal; the massages were hardly actual massages and more of a gateway to things that certainly weren"t massages.

"Thett, I"m serious. Maybe you should look at getting an appointment to see if you"re getting sick." Royal started, but the continuation was cut off by the waiter approaching and asking for their drinks. After the order for a bottle of wine was ordered and the waiter left to retrieve it, Thett just shook his head.

"Perhaps later. I"ll be fine." Thett finished, only getting another eyeroll from Royal as the wine came back for the two to order and eat their meal on more pleasant topics.

------

A lone figure sat in a dark room, a single computer screen fighting to illuminate the darkness that was trying to swallow the room. On the screen was camera footage of a couple dining at a fancy restaurant. He watched in darkness as the couple laughed over fine food and wine, emotionless and silent in the darkness.

"Come back to us, old friend. Come back to who you truly are."

I don't care about whether an ideology is "necessary" or not,
I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.
