Chapter 4

8 winters ago

He looked at his surroundings, it was night time and the snow was about a foot deep. The park was empty and barren, the only source of light was a lit lamp beside the oakwood bench that Adam sat on. In front of him, stood the palace walls and beyond them, inside the castle, a grand feast was being held. S"well as him, he thought. He was not ready to go back and face Master Altar again. Or was it now Father Altar? He didn"t know.

The walls were made of crunched soil and mud. A cheap fence only meant to keep the peasants out, he guessed. The castle walls were made of Simmerstone. Luminous with the texture of marble. Hard, like granite that never cracked and only broke in tiny chips. Too heavy for swords.

Adam grinned at the thought of swords. He dreamt in his mind, battling giant ogres and mammoth creatures. He imagined spearing them right in the chest, just in time to save a dying comrade. Imagined the royal court knighting him and the King or Queen clapping for him. Flowers thrown upon him as he danced on a stage. He dreamt of being a hero.

But he frowned, staring at the snow below him.

To be a hero, I have to to risk being killed, he thought to himself. Then, unwanted voices invaded his head. Voices from Lord Altar.

'You have to learn to fight if you want to be a soldier boy.'

'You have to kill.'

'And where do you think you"ll learn how to fight?'

'And how will you become a hero?'

'Or an anything?'

Who"ll teach a useless bastard like you how to fight?

He pondered if he could ever bring himself to kill anyone in the first place. The heroism idea was promising. But the act of killing another was something that felt" very uncomfortable. As if forbidden. It was natural for soldiers to kill but Adam didn"t have it in him to do such an act. It felt cruel to take another"s life for your own gain. Selfish.

Crunch"

The sound snapped him out of his thoughts. On his far right, he saw a figure walking in the fog towards him. He made out a girl or woman who looked older than himself. She was wearing a thick dress. White with frills.

Immediately, Adam was full of questions. What was she doing out here? Is she royal? Why did she leave the King"s Feast? His heart raced as he panicked, afraid of being caught not attending the feast. Fear glued him to the bench and he dared not move.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The cold wind blew into her face and she folded her arms, squeezing herself. Along the path she saw a bench and someone sitting on it. Who could be so sad to sit out here alone? She thought. But who was she kidding? The Feast was terrible, a noisy ensemble of even noisier drunken lords in too much of a good mood.

She remembered the events. One man was singing on top of a table with a band of three. The King, was laughing uproariously and slamming his fist on the table, and his wife, Gina Crescent, was calming him down. Several other council members were seated with him. Jacobis Bench, Winston Loria and Lord Denbug were all laughing and clinking cups with each other. The mood was joyous.

A group of underaged ladies and princesses were giggling and glancing at the queen"s baby, the prince. She was sitting beside them at their table and heard their whispers. They thought the prince looked cute, with his chubby cheeks. But the conversation took a turn and the focus was on one the King"s hand picked guards, Ser Anthony Endark.

"Oh isn"t he just handsome! One day, I"ll marry him and have children with him!" said a fair blonde girl whose name Liz could not remember. A grumpy faced girl replied, opposite the blonde one.

"You won't. He"s mine and mine forever." She narrowed her eyes to challenge the six girls seated around her. Liz stayed silent and felt uncomfortable.

Suddenly, the blonde girl bursted laughing, startling Liz.

"Look at us. We"re such greedy sluts." She said through tears.

A storm of laughter exploded within the group. Liz left the girls, they were too busy joking about kidnapping poor Ser Anthony. She didn"t feel like she belonged. She didn"t even feel like she belonged in the feast, in the hall. She felt stupid in her dress and she felt stupider in the palace. Tears came up to her face as she left the big hall. There was only one thing she could think about. There was only one thing she cared about.

Father.

Tears streaked her face now as she walked along the pathway. The snow crunched heavily under her boots and she stopped as she got closer to the bench and the boy. She wiped her tears.

She was close enough now to see how awkward he looked. Black hair covered a small head and the boy had baggy clothes. Huge sleeves and wide royal pants, too big for his size. His coat had patterns of a sigil, the house of Bluesteel. Liz wondered whether the boy was a peasant that had stolen some royal clothes.

"Hello?" she called out to him. To Liz, the park looked like it was several miles long and this looked to be the only bench in sight. Might as well rest here, she decided.

"Wullo." The boy smiled uneasily. He looked extremely worried and tense. His eyes reminded Liz of the eyes of a peasant. Beg-full dog eyes that looked hopeless.

"What are you doing out here in the cold, alone?" She asked him, knowing the same question could be asked to herself. The boy fidgeted and hesitated to reply.

"Umm.. Nothin." His eyes darted back and forth. "Was just.. Lookin at the stars."

"The stars?" She looked up at the sky. It was pitch black and only the moon was visible. She raised an eyebrow at the boy. "What stars?"

"Umm""

"Right. Well, you"re missing the King"s Feast. Were you not invited?" She eyed him suspiciously. "Do you live in the palace?"

The boy was on the verge of crying.

"Alright, alright, it"s fine, you don"t have to answer." She went up to the empty side of the bench. "Can I sit here?"

He hesitated, and then eventually scooched over to make more room. Liz sat down and sighed heavily. There was silence between them.

"Did you gots a bad day?" Asked the boy, but then looked as if he regretted it and became quiet.

"The worst." Liz replied with a weak laugh. She noticed the boy studying her.

"Last week was the day my father was banished from the kingdoms. And today just so happened to be Harvest day. The crops are harvested and the kingdom celebrates with a King"s feast." She paused, pondering whether talking to the boy was worth the effort.

"And everyone is so happy and no one cares about my father. My mother is a widow now and never talks to me anymore. The woman father had an affair with is getting hanged tomorrow."
She stifled a tear.

"My father was lucky, being noble he got a light punishment. But to pay his crimes, his arm was hacked off. Now he"ll forever be a cripple."

She wiped the tears with her sleeve and spoke with a harsh, contemptuous tone.

"The King is so bloody lazy that he lets his wife rule over his fat a*se." She stared at the black sky. "Me and my mother are the last Mikals here."

The boy gazed at the floor.

She wanted to ask if he really did belong in the house of the Bluesteels but thought it was pointless. The boy was a peasant, she decided. Why else,

"I best get going. I came here for some air, but it"s freezing out here." Liz got off from the bench. She faced him and looked at his eyes once more. They were unmoving and still. He was calm.

"What is your name?" she asked. It was awkward leaving a person you shared your troubles with, without knowing their name.

"Adam. Snow." he said quietly. He looked at Liz intensely. "Me name is Adamus Snow of house bluesteel." He managed a half smile. Liz did not know what to say. There was only one bastard in Daltonian"s palace, and it was the son of the deceased Lord Garner, brother of Lord Altar Bluesteel.

"Well then, Adamus." She smiled. "I, Elizabeth Mikal, welcomes you to the royal palace." She bowed a curtsy. Adam couldn"t help but burst into laughter. And his laugh was contagious, Liz found herself joining him and giggling.

"Me thanks you. Me guess I"ll be enjoying stayin with these lords then." he replied. Grinning, he added, "No matter how fat me thinks they are."

Liz giggled at Adam"s silliness, found herself enjoying his presence.

"Yup, they"re pretty fat. And stupid. Well, most of them are stupid." Adam roared, Liz thought the entire palace could hear them.

"Shh, what if someone hears?" she whispered and smiled. "Why don"t you come to the palace with me? I have a feeling my absence is worrying some sod at the Feast. I doubt it, but it is cold out here."

Adam looked like he was in deep thought. Then he beamed at her.

"Ok." He got up from the bench. A painfully uncomfortable bench. How he was able to sit there for so long, Liz didn't know.

They walked together along the path, now covered with sheets of snow. Here, from the outside, the palace and the castle glittered with elegance as the stars finally but slowly glittered across the sky. Like the gods lighting a bedroom lamp.

Along the way, Liz explained many things to Adam. What the castle rules were. How it worked. Who were the bosses. Who had power. She shared secrets to him about the handmaidens and the affairs lords had with them. Liz even explained to him some history of the world and how all the houses were united and lived together in one land, Daltonia.

She asked him about where he lived before and what his life was like. Now more comfortable with Liz, Adam told her about life in the stables. His mother was lucky enough to receive gold from Lord Garner and the two of them lived in the far corner of Daltonia. They could live there as long as no one knew about Lord Garner"s bastard son.

"Me loves me father," he said. "Everytim' he visited he take me horse riding or watch the stars with me. And sometim' he even bought me goat milk to bring to me home!" Adam beamed at Liz. Happy memories seemed to flood him. And then, they vanished, replaced with the remembrance that his father was dead. And so was his mum.

Adam looked away.

Liz felt sorry for Adam. But her father was still alive and while she could never see him again, she knew one day she would visit him anyway. Compared to Adam, she was lucky and she felt grateful that at least her father was still out there.

"I"m sorry Adam. At least" At least you have a new father. I hear Lord Altar may be strict, but he cares a lot about family and - and I'm sure he loves you."

"Maybe... " Adam looked at the floor again. A heavy gloom set upon him.

Inside the palace, Liz and Adam walked through the halls and headed towards the feast. Liz saw Adam shaking. Shaking with fear. Fear of what? She wondered. What was it he was so afraid of?

When they turned the corner and reached the doors leading to the feast, Lord Altar was standing there. His arms were crossed and his eyes were wide.

"You." he said.

They froze. Adam whimpered now. Lord Altar strided towards Adam. And without warning, he smacked Adam across the face.

"OW!" he yelled, holding his cheek on the floor and snivelling.

"What in the gods names are you doing out here so late Adamus?! Where have you been up to this time? Because of you, I had to embarrass myself in front of the king. What do you expect me to tell him? That you spent your entire nights locked up in a room doing absolutely nothing? Lazying around? Have some bloody respect for the King, child! This is his Feast." His furious face turned to Liz and then looked back at Adam.

"I see what this is. So you thought you could go flirting around with Lord Fendal"s young daughter? Your a disgraceful brat." Liz felt terrified.

"Please, lord Altar. He"s done nothing wrong." She pleaded him. Lord Altar let go then, and Adam cupped his cheek, tears streaming.

Liz knew Lord Altar would listen to her. Her father was well respected by Lord Altar. Fendal had saved Lord Altar"s life once, and in return Lord Altar had promised to take good care of Liz.

"We will discuss your behaviour in detail, later tonight, after the banquet. Apologize to Lady Elizabeth for greatly disturbing her night." He furrowed his brows at Adam.

"S-sorry"" Adam stuttered.

"Louder." he commanded sternly. "And with proper language, the way I taught you."

"Me - I - I - m' deeply sorry me - my- lady. Please forgive me - my - atro - atrocities."

"It"s" It"s nothing. You don"t need to apologise."

Lord Altar nodded to Liz, as if also apologising for the scene he created.

"Go inside. Eat. And come back to our chambers before midnight. Understand?" Adam nodded weakly.

Lord Altar left the place, walking along the hallway. Liz was not sure what to say to Adam. She stared at him as she heard him muttering something repeatedly while gazing down at the floor. A hand clutching his red face.

"I"m sorry... I"m sorry... I"m sorry...," he whispered to himself over and over again.

Tips to avoid the dreaded quotation mark replacement:

Turn off AutoCorrect which makes -- into a long dash. It'll retain the -- if you do.

Turn off AutoCorrect which makes ... into a smaller ellipsis. It'll remain in three periods if you do.

Always do the coding in the word document--when you want to bold, type <.strong></.strong> instead of bolding it in the word document. Saves time.

Turn off AutoCorrect which makes a _______________ into a page-width long line.

And that's it, unless I missed something. Unfortunately, there's no way to stop an apostrophe from becoming a quotation mark. T^T
