I just want to see where everyone stands on this. I will name a few scenarios, and tell me if member X should be banned.

1. Member X has been on the site for three days, and has displayed a very high ego and is causing disturbance due to his strong beliefs. He is insulting other members, but not to the point of death threats or anything. He has been reported four times for his conduct, and displaying strong and inappropriate language. Should member X be banned?

2. Member A resides in the polls, and never debates or goes to the forums. However, his poll topics contain disturbing pictures, topics, and ideas. He doesn't talk at all, and has done nothing racist or hurtful to other members in the polls section. However, some users want member A banned (though he has been on the site for 7 months) due to a debatable spamming of the polls section and unsanitary polls. Should this member A be banned?

3. Member Y is a troll. He constantly accepts debates, most of them intended to be serious. His username can be seen as offensive by some sensitive users, as it contains a borderline racial word in it. When he does troll, however, it is clean and does not violate the TOS. Some members even think his trolling is funny, and imabench-like style. This user is barely over a week old, but has already accepted forty debates, all of them containing trolling. Should member Y be banned?

4. Member N is a very smart and wise user. He debates topics that almost no one else can debate, and it is rumored he could beat some of the greats in a debate. He is a month old. The problem with him, however, is that he has insulted many users very heavily, and is suspected of multi-accounting to vote on his debates (though he could win without the possible extra accounts.) Some of the smarter DDO users would like to keep him, but most of the members on DDO who know of him want him off the site. Should member N be banned?

5. Member B never ventures outside of the religion forums. He displays strong affection for God, and constantly rejects atheist beliefs. He also advertises selling Bibles from an unknown site on line. Many theists agree with his ideas and believe that he should be kept (despite his advertising,) while the agnostics and atheists (most of them) that are in the religion section want him banned. He has created a few threads dedicated to his Bibles, and he has sold two of them. Should Member B be banned?

6. Member G is a very nice man, who always accepts other's beliefs. He is fairly smart, but has an incredibly racist username. He says he sees nothing racist about it, though it is deemed racist by almost everyone who views it. Member G accepts your opinion, but disagrees with it. He has displayed no hatred or racial actions aside from his username. Should member G be banned?

Would you ban any of these people?

He should be told to create a new account.

It depends on whether the polls violate the TOS (porn, extremely disturbing images, etc.)

No, but he could be compelled to alter his username.

Yeah. Hardly anyone has made death threats on DDO, and even then they were banned.
2. Member A resides in the polls, and never debates or goes to the forums. However, his poll topics contain disturbing pictures, topics, and ideas. No. The First Amendment is a pain in the arse.

Definitely not. The instigators of the debate should raise the Elo prerequisite.
4. Member N is a very smart and wise user. He debates topics that almost no one else can debate, and it is rumored he could beat some of the greats in a debate. He is a month old. At the very least, he should be prevented from making another account.
Again, first amendment. Nope.

He says he sees nothing racist about it, though it is deemed racist by almost everyone who views it. Member G accepts your opinion, but disagrees with it. Absolutely not.

Member X and maybe, just maybe, Member N.

I take it that you do not support Max's personal attack policy?

Not without sufficient evidence at least.

5. Member B never ventures outside of the religion forums. He displays strong affection for God, and constantly rejects atheist beliefs. For spamming, yes.

Spamming what exactly? The only think here that may be looked down upon is selling bibles, but even that isn't banworthy.

6. Member G is a very nice man, who always accepts other's beliefs. He is fairly smart, but has an incredibly racist username. No, warned.

Couldn't care less about the polls section :P

Tell him to stop accepting serious debates. If he doesn't, ban him.

4. Member N is a very smart and wise user. He debates topics that almost no one else can debate, and it is rumored he could beat some of the greats in a debate. He is a month old. There's not enough context here to really give an answer. How did he insult them? Did he actually self vote bomb?

5. Member B never ventures outside of the religion forums. He displays strong affection for God, and constantly rejects atheist beliefs. He should be told not to advertise on the site and should he refuse to comply, eventually he'd have to be banned.

Depends on his language, and the level of hostility of what he has said.

Is he visibly spamming? Define "disturbing".

3. Member Y is a troll. He constantly accepts debates, most of them intended to be serious. Yes. He derails debates.

4. Member N is a very smart and wise user. He debates topics that almost no one else can debate, and it is rumored he could beat some of the greats in a debate. He is a month old. The problem with him, however, is that he has insulted many users very heavily, and is suspected of multi-accounting to vote on his debates (though he could win without the possible extra accounts.) If his multiaccounting is confirmed. Also, it depend on what kind of insults he has spewed out.

5. Member B never ventures outside of the religion forums. He displays strong affection for God, and constantly rejects atheist beliefs. Is he spamming? How is his conduct towards other users?

He should have to make another account with an acceptable username, but if he does so he should be left alone.

Maybe. Maybe not.

No.

I take it that you do not support Max's personal attack policy?

That's not it at all. There was no mention of repeated offenses over long periods of time after failed attempts at moderator intervention. And that's basically the point at issue here.

I think that a lot of people who are opposing what Mikal, Bluesteel and I are talking about here are thinking that we want to run wild with banning people -which is reflected in their conflating "toxic" with "disliked."

Disliked does not mean toxic and toxic does not mean disliked. A toxic member would probably be disliked, but that's beside the point.

The standard for what it takes to ban people should be pretty high. We're not talking about lowering the standard; we're talking about expanding it -very slightly- into a new territory to address situations that current mod trends have failed too thus far.

Heading there

Should this member A be banned?

yes

Should member Y be banned?

heading there, but its relative to what his user name is. If its like RM and has "coonnigger" in it or something like and hes spamming racial slurs after being asked to stop just to spite people , then yes

Warning

No , but receive a warning about possible spam

Should member G be banned?

its relative to what the user name is

Would you ban any of these people?

Nah, a simple kidnapping of a family relative should do the trick.

Is he actually funny? If so, then yes, ban him. I cant afford to have any more competition....

If he is smart and wise, then he has no place here on DDO, ban

5. Member B never ventures outside of the religion forums.....

Say no more. Ban.

What a weenie.

I hate weenies, but I hate everyone else equally, so let him stay, even though hes a freaking weenie.

Yes. Short time span + blatant lack of regard for others should be an instant ban. Maybe not anything like an IP ban, so if they wanted to reform and come back to being a productive member of the site they're more than welcome to make a new account, but banning should be the appropriate punishment.

2. Member A resides in the polls, and never debates or goes to the forums. However, his poll topics contain disturbing pictures, topics, and ideas. Depends on the "disturbing pictures". Is he talking about sensetive topics like rape/incest/bestiality/etc.? No. While these things certainly aren't socially acceptable, it's a belief that people can hold and deserves to be discussed and debated to some extent. Pornography? That's just a TOS violation.

3. Member Y is a troll. He constantly accepts debates, most of them intended to be serious. Yes. Short time span on the site and actively trolling/derailing other people's debates is worthy of a ban.

4. Member N is a very smart and wise user. He debates topics that almost no one else can debate, and it is rumored he could beat some of the greats in a debate. He is a month old. If the multi-account voting allegations are true, then yes that's a TOS issue. If they aren't, then no.

5. Member B never ventures outside of the religion forums. He displays strong affection for God, and constantly rejects atheist beliefs. He also advertises selling Bibles from an unknown site on line.

I'll stop you here. That's just ad-spam, and deserves to be deleted and warning him not to, and banning if he continues.

Many theists agree with his ideas and believe that he should be kept (despite his advertising,) while the agnostics and atheists (most of them) that are in the religion section want him banned. No, just tell him to change his name. If he doesn't then ban that account and encourage him to make a new one under a name that's less racist.

Would you ban any of these people?

If he is multi-accounting (and voting on his own debates), yes.
If not, no.
