Hello everybody,

I just stumbled upon this interesting Forum where you have real debates with votes & all. I scrolled over some topics & some debates, I am still confused about few things:

- I noticed that the debates are very short, with few arguments back & forth, from where I come a debate takes much more then that. Is there a limitation of points you can make or arguments you can put forth ?

- I noticed that the text of the arguments is usually short too! I am used to writing long essays, so in order to make good points, you'd have to start from premises & arrive at conclusions, which takes more than few lines. Is there a space limitation on the text allocated to the arguments? How does this work?

- How is a winner of a debate decided? is it through the sum of points he gets overall, or by the sum of points for the arguments he advanced, or for the final statement & who had the last word?

- How many opponents are you allowed to debate in single topic? Can you have others joining in on either side? Can you debate the voters, are they allowed to participate or are they just spectators?

- Overall, how does this debate thing work?

Thank you.

Hi! Welcome to debate.org!

I scrolled over some topics & some debates, I am still confused about few things:

- I noticed that the debates are very short, with few arguments back & forth, from where I come a debate takes much more then that. Is there a limitation of points you can make or arguments you can put forth ?

For each official debate, there is a maximum limit of five rounds, 10,000 characters each. This can be lowered by the debate instigator, but it cannot be raised above that.

- I noticed that the text of the arguments is usually short too! I am used to writing long essays, so in order to make good points, you'd have to start from premises & arrive at conclusions, which takes more than few lines. Is there a space limitation on the text allocated to the arguments? How does this work?

It really depends on whos debates you are reading. Not all debators are created equal. I would advise reading debates by well known and accomplished members such as bsh1, YYW, or bluesteel. There is a limit on characters, as I previously mentioned.

- How is a winner of a debate decided? is it through the sum of points he gets overall, or by the sum of points for the arguments he advanced, or for the final statement & who had the last word?

On DDO, debates are judged by members who award points based on arguments, sources, conduct, and spelling/grammar. The debators can choose to preselect judges, set standards for judges, or leave voting open to all.

- How many opponents are you allowed to debate in single topic? Can you have others joining in on either side? Can you debate the voters, are they allowed to participate or are they just spectators?

With our current system here on DDO, there are no functioning team debates. The sides of each debate consist of one PRO, and one CON.

- Overall, how does this debate thing work?

The best way to figure it out is to go ahead and instigate a debate! Read some of our good debates from the hall of fame to get a grasp on how debating works here, pick a topic, and open it up for debate!

Thank you.

Welcome to the community, good luck, and happy debating!

10,000 characters at most. You've probably ran into a bunch of debates by people who don't give them much effort.

- I noticed that the text of the arguments is usually short too! See above comment.

Read the voting tab on the debate.

- How many opponents are you allowed to debate in single topic? Can you have others joining in on either side? Can you debate the voters, are they allowed to participate or are they just spectators?

This got annoying fast. Dude read some debates or have them. This information can be had in 5 minutes.

- Overall, how does this debate thing work?

Thank you.

Just to help you out here:

When your quoting, you should ensure that you have at least one full space between your statement and the quote. One this site, when someone quotes, but leaves no statement of their own, it means they are seconding the quote. Most people won't take the time to check if you have your statement at the end of the quote, they will just assume you are in agreement, even when your not.
