Today, the most horrific terror attack in the modern era occurred in Pakistan. Though the death toll is only a fraction of the carnage that took place as a result of the terror attacks of 9/11, today's tragedy is will be remembered in infamy as the attack that singled out children as the targets. Today, 142 children were slaughtered in their school by the Taliban.

Unfortunately this calamity will be largely ignored by he west because it did not involve any westerners. Because of this, I will be changing my profile picture to a plain black background for 72 hours to symbolize a moment of silence in remembrance of the precious young lives lost today. I hope that this will raise awareness for the struggle and suffering that is endured by so many people at the hands of the Taliban.

Please, join me in this "moment of silence". Change your profile pic to a plain black background for 72 hours. Spread this around and make sure this reaches all corners of the internet.

This may be a somewhat controversial opinion, but like with any act of terror or attack on a school, the attackers want the biggest possible reaction. Experts were cited in the wake of Sandy Hawk who had done studies proving that the more the media talks about a school shooting, the more likely school shootings become. The shooter wants to be a media icon. The Taliban want their cause broadcast far and wide; they don't care if it's negative press. They target children precisely because it invokes a visceral reaction that gets media attention. While I think the shooting is an immense tragedy, I also think our disaster porn culture contributes to more tragedies like this. While changing your profile pic to black is relatively benign, the idea that we all need to learn about the tragedies so we can show our sympathy to the victims is itself very concerning. That's a discussion I think we need to have and keep in mind.

I take it back. I've been informed that the school attack was a reprisal for a coming Pakistani military offensive into Waziristan. Not the same type of terrorist act that implicates the concerns I expressed above. Not too big to admit when I'm wrong.

Obama and America had been pressurizing Pakistan for some time. I believe a week ago military action was started, it had been there before, but it was much more now. In response to that the Taliban did this. They also say for every month that we invade them (and its hard since they live in the mountains, and hide in caves) they will do this.

They accomplished what this want, I see many Pakistanis angered at America for asking them to carry out a military operation when a peace cease fire was in place. Thy did what they want: the people hate American even more now.

This is the second military offensive into Waziristan right? I think that hate is misplaced, given that Pakistan needs to take and hold Waziristan if they want to disrupt the Taliban enough that they don't have the power anymore to do attacks like this. The Taliban have attacked a bunch of young girls in NWFP over the years for going to school. Why wasn't that more of an outrage?

Changing your profile picture does and means absolutely nothing. You don't need to show everyone you're being contrite in order to feel contrition. The Taliban is not going to see your pictures and the families of the dead aren't going to gain comfort from your black squares.

You want to do something? Pray for them.
Do research and figure out how you can help the people in Pakistan.
Or figure out the underlying causes and educate people about them.

Don't be an internet slacktivist. If you're going to do something, do it. If you're going to feel contrite, do that on your own. This pictures are trivial.

Pray for them, they gain nothing from your silly black squares.

Actually they gain a lot. The black square is an oddity. It was started in Pakistan and people naturally ask: why the black square? Well, this allows us to reach a greater audience. So no, it aint uselesss, it helps in spreading awareness.

Its important that others realize how much Pakistan suffers from terrorism too, its not just the West.
Its also important the West realizes that the Taliban are getting success in their attempts to fuel hatred towards the West.

I know its not just the West, why do you think our drones are bombing the shite out of the whole region?

And a lot of people read the news, or at least should, and if they don't read the news what good is simply knowing about a tragedy do? I'm just over all of the hypersensualization of tragedy. You're giving the Taliban a platform, that's what they want.

Pray for them? You think changing your picture is worthless, then suggest the one thing that means less than nothing lol

That's your opinion. Just as the picture is Ajab's opinion.

So glad we're all talking about it then.

At least prayer, if you accept it as something real, has power behind it. A black photo square has no power at all. Real or not.

You don't have to accept a social movement as being real.

No I'm aware. And just as you kindly pointed out that you think prayer is bull, I pointed out that this "social movement" is bull. That's all.

If this was Ajab's idea, why didn't he change his picture?

Solonkr~
I don't care about whether an ideology is "necessary" or not,
I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.

In essence, the world is fucked up and you can either ignore it, become cynical or bitter about it.

So how did this work out? Was the problem solved thanks to black avatars?

The objective was to make debate.org people question the change in avatars and find it odd and then be alerted of the issue. spreading awareness was indeed achieved.

The wink just makes you seem proud of your ignorance rather than hilariously sarcastic as you probably intended it to be.
