There seems to be a religious following of debates on DDO. I always get criticised and ignored when I make this point within threads, so I'm going to flesh-out my point here. There are usually at least a score of debates running at any time. My question to the people who argue is: have you really nothing better to do?

I mean, could you not find something better to do than craft arguments that take hours or days to complete, of which generates nothing of serious value? What do you produce by discussing relentlessly? Could not your mental energy be directed better into something that is:

1) Productive

2) Is actually difficult to achieve, thereby granting you a better feeling once completed

Honestly, debates are nothing more than a time-sink for people who have boring lives. I can understand the odd debate every several months, but debating frequently is indicative of a life wasting.

Just think of all the possibilities life have to offer (e.g. travelling, learning a trade/skill, reading to learn etc.), and then realise the embarrassment of camping behind a computer to try and win an argument of no consequence decided by strangers who, equally, have nothing better to do with there time, when in real life, debates mean so very little, as you rarely, if ever, have the opportunity or ability to actually change one's mind in any significant way.

Wow. xD

Such originality :P
Solonkr~
I don't care about whether an ideology is "necessary" or not,
I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.

In essence, the world is fucked up and you can either ignore it, become cynical or bitter about it.

I'm just tired of those debaters wasting their lives away on something so trivial.
Most of the world doesn't think logically, so exercising logical arguments is not practical.

If they are not logical, then they are even more trivial than a "normal" debate is.

Debating is as much about applying logic as mafia is, Khaos.
The voice is the most honed instrument.

Life is an exercise in futility. That isn't how people are looking at it, though.
You were only getting kinda angsty very recently in a thread about free speech, weren't you? The voice is important to people. Maybe it just lends a sense of self-security to stretch it, no?

Completing a game has merit.
A debate worth having is unlikely to change someone's mind. Thus, it is either futile or fruitless.

And, "the most grief-causing, time-wasting disease on DDO you can inflict on yourself on when sitting in front of a computer" is a tie between watching the weekly stupid and streaming Frozen.

Interesting. So what are you? Some cog in the tool which is humanity? It's a sort of psychological armouring, just like stretching your voice, to extend oneself into anything else----speciesism, nationalism, racism, sexism, etc.

Granted, though, that there are better ways to extend yourself into others. Marcus Aurelius has a bunch of quotes to that effect, doesn't he?---about doing right by your fellow man, etc

Did you know that a lot of people have what are essentially suicide bombs embedded deep within their persons? It's frightening, isn't it?----People will have told themselves they'll kill themselves given such and such, and it becomes reality: instinct. It's the same thing with crimes of passion too. Pretty much everything is actually premeditated.

I'm not going to go too hard on begrudging anyone their debates.

Only if you convince the one you are debating.
Convincing judges is nothing more than stroking your ego.

I can't tell if Khaos is mocking Zarroette, or if he's being serious. It sounds so much like Zarroette's tirade against mafia.
I'm becoming less defined as days go by, fading away, and well you might say, I'm losing focus, kinda drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself.

Well then that makes it even less than unlikely to be as productive as a debate then, doesnt it?
