I'm certain I'm missing something from this list, either way, any suggested refinements?

...

Advertising your debate is essential for getting enough variety of votes to make any victory meaningful.

1. Post it to the vote request thread.
The post should contain the topic, and a link to the debate.
It should never contain arguments about why you won (that"s what the debate is for).

2. Vote on other debates.
People can"t help curiosity over who voted on their debates, not all will vote on yours, but it is assured to increase exposure, and thus raise the number of potential votes.
However do not agree to any positive vote trading; such cheap tactics undermine you as a debater, and usually gets discovered by the admin.

3. If instigating, use the Apply In Comments rule.
This exponentially increases exposure, and assuming you set your first round to be acceptance only, gives you time to pre-write your second round.
Of course actually accepting someone is vital. You do not want a reputation for spam.

4. Link it in your forum signature.
Be sure to update this often, you don"t want already closed debates lingering in there.

how do debates get on the front page, anyways?
I am unsure of the exact mathematical formula. However the priority seems to be assigned by how long is left in the voting period, and how many comments are posted.

For example a user talking to themselves in the comments, even when no one is responding to them, can actually slingshot their debate onto the front page.

Why bother advertising your debate when all you have to do is select "Share with My Friends" and send it to a few of them? It takes much less time (about a minute at most). Just make sure to tell them to vote honestly and refrain from influence because of bias.
That is what I do (and that is what @wowwhywhat was talking about). Besides, everybody hates advertisements.

Remembered one more...

5. When the debate enters the voting period, post a comment on it.
Usually people who have added it to their favorites (happens by default if they previously posted a comment on it), will get an email reminder of the activity.
