Unfortunately, I'm stuck at home with the flu, but in this stagnant state I find myself with an unusual amount of free-time. So I decided to go through each of the ten highest ranked debaters on DDO (ranked by Elo) and noted the patterns regarding their stances on the Big Issues.

There are five possible stances a member can take on the big issues:

N/O - No Opinion
N/S - Not Saying
Und - Undecided
Con - Against
Pro - In Favor

Before I continue to share the data I found, I would like to note that Danielle & Kleptin (who is currently 3rd & 6th on the site leaderboards) have N/S for everything, hence there will be a lesser amount of stances compared to the total number of people in the "top ten". I will also not be including any additional N/S numbers from the other members since they serve no purpose regarding patterns.

Abortion // Con - 2 .. Pro - 4 .. Und - 0 .. N/O - 0 ..

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a long list of raw data...

However, there are some interesting things that are noteworthy, but keep in mind that if I say "every member agreed" that I am not including those who had an N/S as their stance on that particular issue.

1) Agreements

These are the topics that every one of these members agree on:

Civil Unions - Pro.

Environmental Protection - Pro.

2) Near-Agreements

These are issues that have only one member going against the rest:

Global Warming Exists - 5 Pro, 1 Con.

Racial Profiling - 5 Con, 1 Pro.

Social Security - 5 Pro, 1 Con.

3) Potential Agreements

These are issues that have full agreement for one side, but also some undecided or with no opinion:

Affirmative Action - 3 undecided, the rest are Con.

Globalization - 3 undecided, the rest are Pro.

Gold Standard - 1 undecided, 1 N/O, the rest are Con.

Medicaid & Medicare - 1 undecided, the rest are Pro.

4) Slight Majority

These are issues where 1 person can be the difference between a perfect split and majority, if they left the majority for the other side:

Abortion - 4 Pro, 2 Con

Capitalism - 4 Pro, 2 Con

Euthanasia - 4 Pro, 2 Con

Gay Marriage - 4 Pro, 2 Con

Homeschooling - 4 Con, 2 Pro

6) Near Perfect Splits

These are the issues that are nearly perfect splits but off by just 1 person:

Animal Rights - 3 Pro, 2 Con, 1 N/O

Gun Rights - 4 Pro, 3 Con

Term Limits - 3 Con, 2 Pro, 1 undecided

Welfare - 3 Pro, 2 Con, 1 undecided

7) Most undecided

That's all the data I've pulled from my observations thus far... please feel free to share your thoughts and add any of your own patterns if you notice any!!

Interesting, because most of them are liberals and things like the MW are divided.

I'm somewhat interested in looking at how people on this list self-identify in terms of ideology, and how that matches up with the results -- though maybe that will be complicated because bluesteel claims to support Michelle Bachmann, lollol.

Lol, unfortunately it seems like the only acceptable way to determine who are the ten "best" is to rely on public opinion, which would take a little bit of time since there are only about 3 or 4 debaters who consistently get mentioned as the best. I'd need to do a poll or something to even get the list of ten first, which takes time I probably don't have.

If someone else wishes to do the work required to compile that list, go for it! I'd have no problem crunching the numbers once the list passes public scrutiny :)

Good observation, lol, I didn't even consider the political ideologies. Perhaps there are some patterns that can be found if we compared their ideologies with their stances on the big issues. That'd be interesting!

Dang it, I messed up on the drug legalization. I must have c/p'd the template score and forgot to edit it with the true tally.

Drug legalization is actually 2 Con, 4 Pro, and 1 undecided.

No man, I give you props for catching it! It was totally a mistake on my part (see previous response).

Lol, I just had that same thought when replying to 16k. I said how it'd be interesting to match-up their ideologies with their stances on the big issues.

If you wanna give it a go, be my guest :) I'd def be interested in the results.

Bout of curiosity, how long did it take you to gather all of this data?

It took me about an hour and a half. I first wrote out all of the big issues in a notepad I keep next to me at all times, then drew my own sections and took the tally manually going through each members profile. It was somewhat tedious, but produced some interesting results, so in my mind it was worth it, lol.

Now do one for the ten best debaters. You'd only have to scrap about half those names.

I was just teasing you. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Lol, with so many people raising torches against the Elo ranking system, I wasn't sure if you were joking or not. I read your response and was like dang, it'd take a while to compile that list, haha.

Cheers!

I could just label him as a liberal, lol.

Then again, that brings in another question of progressive versus liberal, GOP vs Constitution Party, etc.

Ah, perfect. He lists himself as a Republican, but ideology will work. I'll just use that over party label or ideal president.

You talking about Bluesteel's ideology? You totally replied to the wrong comment, haha :) I'll pass the message along though!

Haha yep! I was thinking of doing only the active members and had subutai's and your profile pulled up but then decided to just to with the top ten regardless of activity.

Are they really the top on DDO if they aren't currently on DDO?

Not to be a nit pick, but if you are doing top 10 based on ELO, it has me listed at #9 and for Drug Legalization, I'm listed as Con.

That's a good question. It seems like as long as their profile is activated they count via the leaderboards. I wouldn't mind a policy that removes inactive members from leaderboards after like 6 months of inactivity.

The next time I have a free day I'll do one that features only active members though! I also want one to feature the correlation between their political ideologies and their stances on the big issues. I think that'd be equally interesting.
