Hello DDO : )

Recently, I have seen a few DDO members struggle to understand basic trigonometry, hence they make mistakes in calculating angles correctly. Due to me being such a nice person, I will explain to those of you who struggle with trigonometry how to be more adept in doing so.

Let's have a look at an example.

"If a right triangle has sides of lengths 3 and 4, what is the length of the hypotenuse?"

Literally, this appears to be gibberish. However, if you look closer, this is actually a piece of rhetoric designed to extract trigonometric facts. The answer ca be determined by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of each side. Incidentally, the question involves a common triangle known as a "3-4-5 triangle". The best way to detect when trigonometry should be employed is to determine whether the question involves triangles.

So, instead of taking this example as a gibberish question, one would be wise and correct to read it as a question requiring the use of trignometry and the application of a simple principle known as the Pythagorean Theorem.

There are three take-aways from analysing this extract:

1) Triangles are everywhere. Touch your thumbs together while touching your pointer finger together. You just made a triangle.

2) Only considering the legs of a triangle will leave you struggling to accurately assess totality of the triangle. Always consider the length of the hypotenuse.

3) Remember: SOH CAH TOA - Sine=Opposite/Hypotenuse; Cosine=Adjacent/Hypotenuse; and always respect the mystery of the TOA

4) Trigonometry is the foundation of math and science. For example, the principles outlined above can be used to average directionally orientated data through the SRSS method.

Whilst I won't name those who struggled with this somewhat difficult mathematical calculation, I hope that reading this has been a valuable lesson to everyone.

Please. See my critique of the paper in the comments. Bluesteel's math can only be described as shallow and pedantic.

Please. See my critique of the paper in the comments. Bluesteel's math can only be described as shallow and pedantic.

Some of the expressions used aren't even simplified.
6th graders can simplify an equation.

XD I dropped Trigonometry this semester...it was horrible. I didn't have to end up taking it but now im taking Statistics.

I'm taking Math 3 now (Yay! Common Core) and I enjoy it well enough.
Math is easy AF.

"We wondered what happiness would look like if we could give it a physical form...the shape of happiness might resemble glass...even though you don't usually notice it, it's still definitely there. You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light. I doubt that anything else could argue its own existence more eloquently." ~Lelouch
