I don't think he justifies the conquest...my actual opinion on the matter is that it wasn't justified, but it also wasn't anywhere near out of the ordinary for that time period and as far as conquests go it wasn't nearly as bad. Disease wiped out a lot of the coastal indians, so there probably wasn't much of an issue with settling those lands, and from there minor conflicts just kind of escalated.

I think the best argument you could've made is that without British influence the area would've fallen into the hands of Spain. You kinda hinted at that in your third round

any mexican food you've had is probably closer to southwestern cuisine than actual mexican food, unless it was made by actual mexicans in a hole in the wall style restaraunt. I don't see how anyone couldn't like chili, though...I'm obsessed

Chili I've never tried, but I'm a really picky eater, so I have my doubts.

Start your own debate. Assert your authority over all

I can't, that would be unjust. They have a concept of property :P

Lol!

I still think Locke is valid though..

You kinda hunted for an idea of at that in your third round

After reading your last rebuttal I think I have to agree that marking the conquest off as "just" is a bit of a stretch. There are just too many immoral acts that happened that chip away at that resolution. The property rights argument does try to put a bow on it, and I think it works to some extent, but there are some exceptions to that too (i.e. farming). The only one that I think really works is the technology argument, but I couldn't phrase it in such a way to make it sound more convincing than yours.

I didn't even think about the Spanish alternative...I'd have to show, however, that Spanish conquest would have been worse than British conquest.

I really dislike that argument lol. I don't think that communal ownership is invalid, and the English certainly didn't think so. Common land was just how you grazed your animals for centuries until the enclosure.

I didn't even think about the Spanish alternative...I'd have to show, however, that Spanish conquest would have been worse than British conquest.

That would be a pretty easy thing to prove, they were unquestionably more brutal. I would've responded that the area was more likely to fall under the influence of France which was unquestionably more peaceful with the natives.

Start your own debate. Assert your authority over all

I can't, that would be unjust. They have a concept of property :P

Lol!

I still think Locke is valid though..

I really dislike that argument lol. I don't think that communal ownership is invalid, and the English certainly didn't think so. Common land was just how you grazed your animals for centuries until the enclosure.

That just begs that question of what ownership is. Calling it "their" property doesn't necessarily make it theirs...what do you perceive legitimate ownership to be?

I didn't even think about the Spanish alternative...I'd have to show, however, that Spanish conquest would have been worse than British conquest.

That would be a pretty easy thing to prove, they were unquestionably more brutal. I would've responded that the area was more likely to fall under the influence of France which was unquestionably more peaceful with the natives.

On the contrary, claiming that you can evict people from their homes because they don't own the land is the question begging. It's typically safe to assume that someone owns the land where they make their home unless you're given evidence to the contrary. The principles by which even the more collectivist tribes utilized their lands were similar principles to common law customs governing English agriculture.

I actually haven't thought about what constitutes legitimate ownership of land much but with a few caveats first come first serve seems valid. Explorers shouldn't be able to just claim land, leave it behind forever, and murder anyone who settles there, but typically unclaimed land was inhabited anyway and the argument that land should go to who brings the most benefit is fatally flawed and would require us to constantly reassess ownership. Societies should be able to determine ownership customs for themselves. If people have lived there for 2000 years it's absurd on it's face to say it doesn't belong to them, even if we disagree with the way they allocate land. It's so...Eurocentric to just be like "oh yeah, they didn't agree with our customs so we can take their land". Not even Eurocentric, more like Anglo-centric and only centered around a certain part of England...Most of my ancestors have a long history of being bounced around by the English (literally why I made the scots-irish argument lol).

The context here being that they were a part of the Anglosphere but got pushed around by England anyway groups anyway
