I recorded the update and announcement live--I had a lot to say and it just seemed to make more sense to say it than type it.

I disagree on the point of monthly topics instead of weekly.

Although topics may take a bit to get going, the monthly topic will die out, and the weekly topics can continue discussion after being unstickied.

Yeah, but there comes a point where one feels too bombarded by weekly topics to really do any of them justice. Maybe we can just agree to disagree here.

I think there are things that can be done to keep the discussion in monthly topics going, but if they didn't pan out, I am not so rigid as to be unwilling to switch to a weekly format. Though, I still think a month long format is best: it (a) gives topics time to gain traction, (b) doesn't pepper people with posts, and (c) gives time to really explore the OP.

I don't think agreeing to disagree is a viable solution to conflicting ideas with an administration. If not doing the weekly topic, I think only a bi-weekly topic would work.

Chris, I think that this is the kind of issue only empirics are going to resolve, because I guarantee you we could go in circles on this issue all day. Agreeing to disagree is not a solution; it's a recognition that the discussion as yet as no solution. I don't understand why recognizing that fact is somehow not "viable," particularly when it's the truth.

I still believe that a monthly topic selection would be best, for all the reasons I've cited.

Fair enough. I added a platform update about advocating voting reform on the site, promised not to contribute to excessive drama in this election, and reviewed my trackrecord on the site.

Agreeing to disagree in a situation like this is almost like, "well, I'm not compromising - and I'm standing with my opinion."

I still believe that a monthly topic selection would be best, for all the reasons I've cited.

I don't think a topic will last more than two weeks.

Perhaps it is, but is that necessarily a problem. Compromise is important, for sure, but not every issue should be or needs to be compromised. Again, I am not so wedded to a monthly topic that I wouldn't consider other options, but I would like to test out the monthly topic first.

The monthly topic doesn't really achieve the goal of the idea, IMO. The weekly topic is designed to promote activity. One thread per month isn't doing that.

I am not quite sure I agree that the primary objective is activity. I would've defined the goal as generating quality content. But, nonetheless, there you do have a point. One topic per fortnight, I guess.
