Interview with the top two contenders. part 1 of 2

Please wait to respond to this thread until all parts have been posted.

A few observations:

1. I did not interview these together as it may seem in the layout. I interviewed each separate and then have attempted to mesh them together based on relevancy for the convenience of informing the community of their positions.

2. I am trying to be as impartial as I can be, some questions are more pointed then others. Keep that in mind.

3. Debatability has been busy the last few days which results in this interview containing more input from BSH1.

Nevertheless, I am convinced this interview will be informative and insightful. Both Candidates are great members of this site and deserve respect and consideration, with that lets see the interview. (If you have feedback concerning the interview itself, please PM me.)

Introduction:

Q. Debatability, why do you want to be president?

"I love DDO and I want to make it a better place. I think both thett and I have some very good ideas for community development and we're very excited work together to institute them if elected. I realized that being president was what I wanted after Ore left and I have enjoyed working on projects that have facilitated quality discussion in the forums. I really hope to work towards achieving more feasible goals."

BSH1, same question.

"I care about the site. I mean, that's the bottom line for why I want to run. This place has given me an outlet for the activity I love (debate), but it's also done so much more than that. I have met friends on here who I genuinely believe I will still be friends with 5, 10, 15 years down the road. I met my boyfriend of nearly 2 years, as well. This site has also helped me grown as a person--challenging my intellectual acumen and personal fortitude. The community here has done so much in so many ways for me (and for many users), that I feel the need to give back. It has profoundly touched my life, and that's not something I can ignore. I think that the Presidency is an excellent way in which I can return the favor, in which I can make significant positive contributions to the site."

Q. If you could describe DDO in one word what would it be?

Debatability "That's actually really hard. I'd say argumentitive."

Bsh1 "Diverse. I think that's true not just in the number and variance of users and ideologies on the site, but also true with regard to what the site has to offer--from social aspects, to mafia, to debate, etc."

Q. What is your opponent"s biggest strength?

Debatability "I'd say his involvement in community building in the past. His history with the bladerunner administration as well as involvement in the beginners mafia and beginners tournament projects."

BSH1 "I think her biggest strength is her desire to serve the site. I think that's what is really great about this election, DDO is making a choice from among candidates who really want to do what is best for the community."

Issues:

Q. Debatability, how do you plan to reach out to and motivate Juggle to take an interest in DDO?

"Airmax will give us a representive to contact, and thett and I will communicate our concerns about the mobile update and other things with juggle. It's pretty simple. We want to take things one step at a time though, because juggle will very likely not respond well to a long list of desired updates."

Q. BSh1, your platform contains a fair amount of involvement from Juggle. How do you plan to reach out to and motivate Juggle to take an interest in DDO?

"Actually, I think the recent mobile update is promising with regard to working with Juggle. It shows that they are, in fact, willing to update the site, and, contrary to many claims, they are not wholly unresponsive to DDO's concerns. This gives me hope for a lot of the ideas on our platform that would require Juggles assistance. While I still believe Juggle will be hard to work with, and that updates are unlikely, I think that the outlook has become a vastly more optimistic one.

Debate's platform lacks many technical updates (just the mobile site, which was already fixed, and fixing the home page, something I support and have a specific plan to do it) because it was built on an assumption which failed to be realized (i.e. Juggle's "current detachment"). It also shows that having a litany potential updates one could present to Juggle a good, pragmatic strategy--even if Juggle doesn't reach out, those ideas are there in case they do. You never know when Juggle will turn its eyes to DDO. I think that's a strength of our platform over Debate's.

But, as to your question, I believe Airmax informs Presidents on methods of communicating with Juggle, so I would quickly reach out to him if elected. As to the strategy of approaching those conversations, that is something I can't say with certainty. Ultimately, it depends on how Juggle reacts to us initially reaching out, and we can develop a tack based on that."

Q. Debatability, it seems some members are concerned that your age will lessen the chance of Juggle taking you seriously. What is your response to that Concern?

"My age isn't really a factor in the election for a few reasons. Firstly, there's a pretty solid chance that what ever juggle representative I contact won't even know my age. It's unlikely that they would go onto my DDO profile and look through my information. Even then, the president talking to a juggle representative isn't the same thing as a president trying to get the attention of an entire corporation. When I communicate with juggle, I'll be talking to one person via email. Maturity and responsibility are the only things needed to proficiently email back and fourth. Moreover, airmax will recommend the victor of the election to Juggle as the sites liaison meaning that he finds both bsh and myself to be qualified in dealing with juggle."

Q. BSH1, Is age an issue in this election?

"I think that age could matter depending on the circumstances, but I am not making it a central campaign issue precisely because I don't know how Juggle would react to a younger president. I have a lot of respect for Debate, and I don't think she'd make a poor president. But, I think that if Juggle knew her age, and they might find out, there is a risk that they may see her as less credible than someone older. Really, though, to answer your question, it needs to be up to the voters to decide whether age is an issue for them in this election, and I think that there are a lot of substantive divisions between us that matter more in this cycle than age. But that a choice voters need to make for themselves."

Q. BSH1 A recent President of DDO left the site citing juggles inaction for their frustration. What will you do if Juggle is unresponsive?

"Well, I think the first thing that is worth pointing out is the fact that Ore left because Juggle wouldn't fix the mobile update, and a few days later, they fix the mobile update. It seems, in a sense, that Ore threw in the towel too early. So, I think a lack of cooperation should be met with patient determination by the President.

Secondly, the focus of my platform, as I've noted numerous times, is on community-building that can be done without Juggle's involvement. So, Juggle's unresponsiveness would not stymie our ability to achieve the key part of our effort. There are a lot of efforts that we could pursue in that case: voting reform (something not found on Debate's platform), community events, fan fiction support (also not on Debate's platform), etc. Again, these are the things we want to emphasize anyway, so Juggle's recalcitrance would not be a major roadblock for us."

Part 2 of 2

Q. Debatability's platform states that "Ultimately, our goal is to get members involved in producing quality content and running quality projects." While your two platforms have a few distinct options, is it fair to say you are both focused on community building?

BSH1: "I think that it is fair to say we both emphasize community-building. As I've said from the start, the main focus of our campaign is the stuff that doesn't require Juggle's help--and we have a bunch of ideas in that regard: fan fiction, voting reform, community events, bi-weekly administration updates, noob mentorship, etc. So, we really do have a lot of content unique to our platform that is centered on community-building and that we can pursue without Juggle's input.

We also have on our platform site updates that do require Juggle's help, but those take second place to the community-building efforts. Really, we just felt it was important to have a well-rounded platform, and one that wasn't exclusive to one or the other, but that still emphasized that which was most achievable: community-building."

Q. Debatability, recently in the forums an old post of yours resurfaced about abolishing the presidency. Can you explain how your view has changed from then to now?

"I actually made a post in my presidential update about that. The post was about half a year old, and my perspective has vastly changed through my experience as a vice president and a president. I'll try be brief because you can view a more in depth explanation in this thread:
I now realize that regular members simply aren't motivated enough, nor do they have the credibility to do many of the things that ought to take place under an effective administration. The president's job is to not only be an intermediary between the site and juggle, but also between the site and the mod. This means that the president comes up with site improvement ideas and brings them to the moderator who helps them institute the idea. Then the president is charged with carrying out the idea with the help of regular members. The president plays a huge role in this process. If you look to any inactive administration, you can see that very little gets done in the way of site improvement. That is because airmax's job isn't to actively seek out ways to improve the site, and regular members don't have the credibility or the drive to get things done."

Conclusion:

Q. Debatablilty, why should the members of DDO vote for you and not BSH1?

"Thett and I have a more realistic platform because we focus almost solely on things that are under our control - community development. We will move slowly with juggle and ideally get some things done in the area of technical development, but we understand that it's a bad idea to push juggle too much."

Q. BSh1, Why should the members of DDO vote for you and not Debatability?

"I think that Debate is a great person who also cares about the site. But I think that there are a few things that set us apart. Firstly, I tend to be extremely active on the site, which means I can give DDO a lot of my focus and attention.

Secondly, I think community-building is another great reason to prefer the Bsh/Zaradi ticket. We have things we would like to do, regarding community-building, that Debate lacks on her platform, including working with fan fictions, raising the threshold for what counts as a passable RFD, hosting community events, a separate mentorship program for noobs (which Zaradi has already pioneered), a "how-to" guide for debaters, and regular administration updates. I think that these are issues that matter, and we're the only ones talking about them. Particularly, we'd be doing a lot more to reach out to noobs and to promote transparency.

Thirdly, I think I have a really solid trackrecord on the site. I hosted and designed the first AAN (beginners') tournament, ran the last two HOF elections, have modded almost 20 beginners' mafia series, have run 6 tournaments on the site, wrote a fan fiction, contributed to the wiki, served as Vice-President, created a voting guide, and designed and hosted DDO Jeopardy, among other things. I think this shows that I have had long-term, positive involvement in a variety of areas on the site. I think I have shown that I can get things done, and that I am willing to work to improve the site in many different ways. I also think that Debate's track record on the site is more sparse.

Fourthly, I think that voting norms are something we're a lot more focused on than Debate and Thett are. Having a higher standard for what constitutes an acceptable RFD will weed out a lot of poor votes that are cast on debates, and will give the voting moderators the tools to better enforce good voting norms. While critiquing RFDs and offering incentives to vote are great, they will only reach a small portion of all voters. Having a higher voting standard is an additional and important tool in improving the quality of votes cast on DDO.

Ultimately, I think DDO has some good options in this election, and I think Debate is a great user, but I really do believe that our platform and track record on the site speak to our qualifications and our willingness to address a lot of important issue."

Damnit, Annie, that's *way* too forthright. You need to practice being more subtle.

For instance, here's a good way to say the same thing, but more subtly, with a far higher success rate:

The *Wrong* Way: "Matt, take off your shirt."

The *Right* Way: "Matt, there's a tick that has planted itself on your chest. It's sucking the life out of you, and you need someone to remove it immediately. Fear not, though, because I've brought my tweezers.

*Five minutes later*

Oh, it turns out that it wasn't a tick, but a chest hair. My apologies. Great abs <3"

Nah...I can appreciate you even with your shirt. You're a great guy. That being said..I wouldn't object to it if you did remove your shirt.

I don't care about whether an ideology is "necessary" or not,
I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.

How can you not like abs?!?!

Were you not in the hangout last night when YYW and I were discussing out attraction to twinks?

No, I must not have been, because I'm still confused on what a "twink" actually is...

Reading this, when I got to the part about age being an issue in the election (I'm really not following things closely), Airmax's profile picture popped into my head. While I doubt Juggle is going to suddenly be actively involved, they seem easy going about who they are willing to work with.
