PetersSmith's Comprehensive Guide to the Polls section and FAQs

Section I: Voting and Commenting

Introduction

So, what is the polls section? The polls section is that one on the right on the main page (view from a computer). This is where users ask a "poll question" in accordance with a variety of topics, add possible choices, and then a voter answers the question to the best of their ability. One has the option to write a comment with their vote, as well as in the comment section below. The difference between the polls and the opinions is that, for the polls, more than two answers are possible, pictures can be added for each answer as well as custom or pre-selected descriptions, and you do NOT have to write an explanation for your vote. Let's get the most basic and boring things out of the way first:

How to Navigate the Polls Section

So, normally on the front page four polls are posted. These polls are the most recent added and you can simply just click on them and vote for an option. To view all polls, click on the "polls" (obviously) and you'll be directed to all recent polls. To narrow it down to a category, click on a category to the left, where you can then organize the polls through "most popular", which entails polls that have the most votes AND comments, newest, recently updated, no votes, and "closed". A closed poll is a poll that had a set time users would be able to vote, but that time has passed and users can no longer vote on the poll (they may still comment).

Different Types of Polls and How to Vote

There are three types of polls: list, image, and faceoff. A "list" poll is the most typical poll there is. There's a title, an optional short description about the poll as a whole, and then two or more answers in list form, obviously. Each answer has an optional image accompanied with it, an optional description, and has the total number of votes with it (if any). Some descriptions are longer than others, so you may click/select the "more" at the end of the description to view it all. You can click the "comments" on each answer to view all comments, and you may click on the actual vote tally to view all users who voted for the option and are too lazy and/or scared to comment. To vote, simply click on the selection box and then you have the option to "just vote" or "vote and comment". Choose either and you're good to go.

The second type of poll is an "image" poll. These ones are the least common, but, as you could imagine, enlarge the "picture" accompanied with the answer. Otherwise, they are no different from a "list" poll.

The final type of poll, and the most common, is a "faceoff" poll. These polls feature two options, side-by-side, where a user can only vote for one or the other. Usually it's a "yes" or "no" question, but sometimes it can be more complex. Like with "list" and "image" polls, it has the optional poll description, and the OP can add a description accompanied with each option (not separate).

If you accidentally vote for an option you can simply vote for another option, but you will be UNABLE to remove a vote entirely, once you vote your vote is stuck to that poll. If you want to edit your comment with a vote, simply vote for another option, then vote back to the original one and edit the comment.

If you wish to comment on a poll without voting simply type a comment at the bottom of the poll and then hit "submit".

FAQs Regarding Voting and Commenting on a Poll

1. My comment with my vote was removed *sad face*

Most likely your comment was removed because it was reported or was otherwise problematic. If you would like clarification on removed comments, please contact me or airmax1227. Refrain from using vulgar language, profanity, hate content, and insulting other members with your comments. It is not possible for your actual "vote" to be removed. Airmax1227 is the main mod of the site. Here is a link to his profile: http://www.debate.org...

2. My comment was "submitted for moderation" right when I clicked "submit", what gives?

The comment filter for the polls can be very finicky. Your comment could have been removed for the reasons such as words that the filter does not recognize (usually usernames), "quoting" too much, or having too many "single characters". Otherwise, your comment could be removed for obvious reasons like if you use profanity. Either type it again with different wording, or just forget it. If you write a long paragraph, you may want to "copy" it before you click "submit" in case it doesn't go through the filter. I have noticed that longer comments are less likely to be submitted, but don't quote me.

3. My comment was removed *angry face*

See FAQ 1.

4. Umm, the answer I voted on is gone lol

I'll get to this later.

5. What do those symbols mean under the title image?

The "plus sign" means add a new poll topic, the "star" means to favorite it, the "podium" means to debate the topic, and the "flag" means to report it.

Section II: How to Make a Poll

List Polls

Ask your question: Might as well start with the most common type of poll. To make a poll, click on a poll and then in the top right it says "create a new poll", click on that. Alternately, you can type your poll title in "ask a poll question" in the polls section itself. You will automatically be taken to the "list" type of poll format. At the top you must "add a poll title", which should be a given. Right below that, you have an option to add a short description about your poll. To the left of the title, you'll see a picture of a camera. This is where you add your "title image". Click on it, and it will have automatic pictures based on your poll title (it probably searches Google) that you can click. You may type something else in the "search", and it will add another queue of pictures. If you are not satisfied with any image, you may "upload your own image", where you can upload an image from your computer (must be a .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF (the .gif won't actually work though)).

Poll type: You'll notice that your "poll type" is already on list, so don't touch that. However, to the right is "advanced options". Here, you can allow members to "add their own answers" after the poll is submitted or you can set a date and time to when you want the poll to be "closed", as discussed in the previous section. I HIGHLY recommend you do not let users add their own answers. The poll will be spammed and ruined.

Categorize it: Pick a category from the list, it's not brain surgery. Make sure it does relate to your topic though.

Add answers: Here is the meat of a list poll. You'll see only two options at first. Type an answer where it says and a bunch of pre-selected options will appear. You can click on one of them if your poll pertains to something, such as "what is your favorite fantasy creature", your first option is "griffin", and then you can select the "griffin" from the list and it will automatically add a description to the poll. Do not add a pre-selected description if your poll does not need one. I am sick of seeing "Yes" is a television provider in Israel. You may then add a picture, which is identical to like adding a picture in the title. However, you may notice a picture is already there if you selected an answer from the pre-selected list, you can just replace it.

To add your own description, simply do not choose a pre-selected option and then type in your own description. If you clicked a pre-selected option and added your own description afterwards, your description is GONE. So remove that answer by clicking the "X" and then re-add it and make sure you don't click an option from the list.

To add more answers, simply click that button. That's kind of it. Once you're satisfied, click "submit". I recommend you are completely satisfied with the poll before you submit, because YOU CANNOT EDIT POLL OPTIONS OR REMOVE THEM AFTER THE POLL IS SUBMITTED. You may always add more options after your poll is submitted.

Image Polls

Same thing as "list polls" but focus on the "image" for some reason. To switch the poll to an "image poll" click "image" under poll type.

Faceoff Polls

Same thing as list polls, but there are only two options. To switch the poll to a "faceoff", click "faceoff" under poll type. Here, you can only add two options, where you can add your own short description along with the option, but not separately. The images work the same way as well.

FAQs Regarding Making Polls

1. When I submitted my poll, one or more of my answers were automatically "submitted for moderation", how do I get them back?

Okay, there are several reasons why this happens. The first is that your answer, either the description or the answer itself, contained profanity or otherwise vulgar language. Another issue is that it contained symbols or other languages that the poll filter can't process, so avoid math equations, copying lists, and other similar things. It is also possible it was submitted because your answer contained only numbers or symbols. Rephrase or rewrite the poll description and then try submitting the option again after you made the poll if the answer was submitted right away.

2. My poll was submitted immediately, care to explain why?

I personally have only encountered this problem once. The only reason why I could see this happening is that your poll question was too long, contained profanity or "odd" words, or your title description contained profanity or "odd" words.

3. I could swear I didn't let users add their own option, but that option is still there.

You can always add answers to your own poll, that's what you're seeing.

4. My title description and/or faceoff description was cut-off *unhappy face*

I don't know the exact amount of words, but a too long title description will be cut off, so keep it short. About a small paragraph. Descriptions for faceoffs comply to the same rules as a title description, so try to keep it short as well. Descriptions for list polls can go on forever.

5. I want my poll and/or answer gone.

Contact me or airmax1227 directly and it will be removed eventually.

6. It won't let me submit my poll.

First possibility: you have a duplicate answer. Remove one.

Second possibility: there is a "corrupt image" in your poll. If you selected an image from the automatic select, there is a chance that the image is no longer found on Google, or is "broken" in some way. This will completely destroy your poll and you will be UNABLE to find which option has this issue. If you plan on making a long poll, to be safe, you should upload all of your own images.

7. It won't let me upload my own image.

The image is either not the correct file type, or it is too large. The max resolution is the standard 1920 X 1080. You may notice that the image doesn't fit the whole box if uploaded. This is because the image is too small. 400 pixels usually fits it well enough.

8. One of my poll options were removed after I submitted it.

Your answer was removed because its content violated the TOU in some way, such as profanity in the description. Try to refrain from the "obvious", where the "obvious" will be discussed in the next section.

Section III: Poll Removal and "Problematic Users"

Poll Removal and/or Answer Removal

There have been several issues as of late regarding poll removal. Certain polls are removed because they violated the TOU, which can be read here: http://www.debate.org...

The most common reasons why polls are removed are: spam, hate content, insulting other members, and harm to minors. 1. Spam is generally defined as a poll that serves no purpose and is thus completely useless. Repeated polls about the same topic also counts as spam, as well as "duplicates". OVERLY BIASED POLLS COUNT AS SPAM. 2. Hate content generally revolves around polls obviously insulting races of any kind, including whites. 3. Insulting other members are polls that either purposefully insult other members, or are "callout polls". A callout poll is a poll directed towards ANY user without their permission, regardless if positive or negative. 4. Harm to minors are polls that include gruesome images, such as gore, profanity, or vulgar language/images (not necessarily pornography).

If you have an issue regarding censorship/poll removal, don't understand it, or completely disagree with it. Please contact airmax1227, myself, or read this: http://www.debate.org...

Problematic Members and Trolls

If you have frequented the polls section you may have noted some users frequently making polls that violate the TOS. These users usually make obvious "multi accounts" and are fairly easy to spot, posting things containing racist content or insulting other members. I try to get to their new accounts as quickly as possible, but one of the issues is how voters react to them. Do not make callout polls about them. We do not want to bring attention to them. Do not acknowledge them, congratulate them, or try to argue with them. Several users seem to enjoy the company of these "problematic users" and frequently interact with them and make them feel welcome. Do not do this because this is one of the reasons they keep coming back. They aren't serious and are just trolls; insulting them or arguing with them is COMPLETELY POINTLESS. REPORT THEM AND MOVE ON. A more permanent solution will be developed eventually.

Other FAQs

1. How do the leaderboards work?

The leaderboards are organized based on mainly on poll topics. Whoever has the most poll topics is at the top of the leaderboards. You may also organize it based on all answers ever added by the poll maker, all votes the poll maker and/or user made, or all comments the poll maker and/or user made. The number of poll topics include all the polls that were removed, while the number on a user's profile does not. This is why some users are "high up there", but have had 30+ of their polls removed.

2. How do I report polls?

Just click the "flag", fill out the form, and click "submit".

3. Am I allowed to ask questions that were already asked?

Sure, just make sure that "already asked question" wasn't like three days ago or the same day. It does get repetitive though, so try to be unique.

3. Who do I contact if I'm having other issues?

Airmax1227 or me, but airmax1227 is more likely to be of more help.

4. A lot of my polls were removed; I feel like you have a personal bias against me.

Your polls were removed because they violated the TOU. It may seem like I don't like you because you violate the TOU so often, so refrain from doing it.

5. (Insulting question)?

While the moderators are fair game, I recommend not insulting me because I am a user and I have feelings too. If you have a problem with me personally, then we can discuss it through a PM. If that "problem" is in regards to moderation, discuss it with airmax1227.

6. I'm trying to find a specific poll, care to help?

I can't really help you. The search bar is broken. However, you can go to a user's profile and click on the polls that they made and then try to find it from there; it's organized by most recent polls first. For example, http://www.debate.org... will take you to the first poll I ever made (oh what a sad sight). Alternatively, you can go by votes, but that goes from oldest to newest. For example, http://www.debate.org... will take you to my most recent vote.

7. If I'm having a problem with a user in the polls section, who do I contact?

Contact airmax1227 if you are having a "problem" or some sort of "conflict" with a user.
