Hey DDO!

So it's been awhile since I've posted any kind of update thread, and while I don't really have a lot to say, I figured I'd do so anyway.

1) Bsh's administration

I'd first like to say that it's been a pleasure working with Bsh for these past 3 months. His administration has worked hard on several projects and has done some great things. While some projects have not yet come to fruition, I am excited to continue to work with Bsh, and hopefully in the near future I can focus on finalizing some of the other projects we have worked on.

While I realize it's not always easy to see the fruits of what A DDO membership president does, Bsh has been a great president so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else he can achieve, and working with him to assist on everything he'd like to accomplish over the next 3 months.

2) Site conduct stuff

I don't want to dwell on this much, except to say that there have been some issues lately. Some members occasionally need to be reminded that there are standards here and that those standards need to be followed. I believe that having spoken to several of the members that have been problematic lately, that some of these issues should finally subside.

I'd just like to add that I think we all inherently recognize the value of civility in these forums, and that the best way we can each encourage the best possible outcome is to individually set the best examples of civility that we can.

3) No-RFD debates

At this point in the sites history, we really do have an option that debate instigators can select to their preferences across the entire spectrum (though some work is being done to provide even more options). If you want votes to have the highest possible standard for example, choose up/down judge voting and select 5 voters that have a reputation of casting extremely good votes. If you want it to be a bit more liberal, choose 3k ELO minimum, up/down open voting. A bit more voter freedom, choose up/down anyone can vote options. For instigators that want more depth to votes, but want to play it a bit safe, choose open voting 7-points with 3k ELO minimum. Those are just a few examples of the options that instigators can choose to customize voting to their preferences.

For instigators that want absolutely no standards, perhaps because they want as many votes as possible, then simply choose the NO-RFD required option. I don't recommend this option because it means the instigator is saying that no standards apply to these votes, but it is an option, and it might be one worth using if a debaters simply wants to see which side is the the most popular - although if a debater does want to do this, I would strongly recommend instead using "NO-RFD, up/down voting" for this.

I bring this up because recently there have been a couple of NO-RFD debates. After the debates were over, many of the votes were reported, and it is true that many of these votes were objectively awful in another context. But because these votes do not require an RFD, essentially making ideological voting, and unexplained points entirely allowable, voting moderation will NOT remove these votes.

Debate challengers therefore need to be careful to read all of the debates rules and criteria before accepting a debate. I realize it is frustrating to a challenger to find out that their debate has no voting standards after spending time on a debate - but that's how it is if the rules are created that way.

While vote moderation procedures still apply in the same way on these NO-RFD debates (meaning I still submit the votes to Whiteflame who reviews the debate and the vote, then I read the review, and then he posts the results), many of the votes on these debates have already been reviewed with those results posted. So I would strongly encourage members who report votes to take a glance at the comments of debates before reporting a vote to see if a vote they are going to report has already been reviewed. I realize that based on our standards these votes look objectively awful, and in other cases they would be, it's important to realize that here on DDO we would like to accommodate the entire spectrum of voting preferences, and the lowest tier of standards in that spectrum, also applies.

4) My activity & AMA

Lately I have been a bit more active in the forums, either posting comments in threads, or replying to conduct directly that I have viewed as a problem. The goal of the latter is to provide examples to members of what I have felt is problematic conduct, and perhaps by the possibility that I might reply directly to inappropriate conduct, discourage members from doing so.

While I do believe there is some value in doing so, it's not something I have ever liked to do, and due to the time constraints of my forum activity, it is unlikely that I will continue to do so. Though I had the time to do this for a short period of time and may continue to do so every so often, because time constraints require me to focus more strictly on my direct responsibilities, I will now revert back to what is generally my average forum activity level, and post on rare occasions.

Before that occurs though, I felt that it would be a good idea to give members an opportunity to ask whatever they like in this thread. I've done a couple personal AMAs, but I'm not sure if I have ever done a Moderation specific AMA. So while members will always have the opportunity to ask me whatever they like via PM at any time, members can feel free to (for a few days at least, time permitting) Ask the Moderator Anything. There are some restrictions though, I'm not going to answer questions about personal member issues, I likely wont explain why X member isn't banned (though this question can be asked in broad terms), or talk too much about Juggle and its relationship to the site etc... So with that in mind, for the next few days I will do my best to answer whatever questions members have before I fade back into the mist....

So go ahead and ASK the MODERATOR ANYTHING...

Thank you

Nothing in particular, I just figured it was the right thing to do to give members the opportunity.

But if no one has any questions, that's perfectly fine.

If I felt like there were specific issues that I needed to talk about, I'd just talk about them. But this is a chance for members to ask questions about things they might not be clear on, or for them to give me a chance to set the record straight about whatever they are curious about.

Just how I am I guess.

Why are you so awesome?

There's no evidence for this whatsoever.

Are you going to do something about the Mirza/YYW situation?

I believe i have, I guess we'll see what happens.

Have you ever raised your voice above the even tone it seems to be permanently stuck at?

Aside from at sporting events? Not really.

Do you plan on remaining head moderator of DDO until the day you die?

Probably not.

Out of Bladerunner, Whiteflame, F16, Bluesteel, and Raisor, who would you be most comfortable with replacing yourself with as the head moderator of DDO?

Any one of those individuals would make a great head mod, though Bladerunner is the current assistant mod (so essentially the #2 mod of the site) and has been doing it for longer than any of those other members, so he'd be the logical next in line.

Out of all the members on the site under the age of 18, who do you think will grow up to be the best moderator candidate?

Not sure, I'll have to think about that.

What's your favorite debate on the site?

Bluesteel's holocaust debate, my Avatar debate, Imabench's DNA debate... I like all of those and dozens of others... So I can't really say which is my fav.

Who are you going to nominate into the HoF, next cycle?

Not sure yet, but Phil will probably be one of them.

Which 3 currently inactive members would you bring back to the site if you could?

Cliff.Stamp, Poejoe, and Innomen

Can you read the messages I write under "Please enter any additional reasons/explanations:" when I de-activate an account?

I can yes and I often do check out members reasons for deactivation.

What's your honest opinion of me (since I was WYMM when you did your big milestone shout-out post thing) ?

You seem like a nice guy and are a good member of the site.

How do users get banned? Is there like a shiny "ban user" button next to every person. Or do you personally have your own banhammer. Or every time you ban a user you call in a digital airstrike of ban hammers until the user's account is closed?

Every account can be accessed in the admin portion of the site. In the admin, there are a number of options which allows me to effect accounts in various ways. These include among others, removing voting privileges, manually verifying the account, and closing (banning) the account. So essentially, as you said, there is a "ban user" button next to every member.

I was gonna ask if you're waiting for Fallout 4. I'm so excited for that. To be honest, you aren't missing out on much at this point - there just hasn't been any spectacular games to hit the XB1 yet. I just got minecraft for it though, lol, so obviously I had to ask.

Yeah that's exactly what I haven't purchased an XB1 yet. I have all these free games on 360 to play and not a single game on the XB1 that I care for yet.

No hat. Doesn't fit with my physically manifested style.

2. Does mingling with the unwashed masses offend your delicate sensitivities?

My sensitivities aren't particularly delicate.

3. Would you consider the disestablishment of the DDO democracy, so that we might replace it with a magisterial court to which you appoint whomever you enjoy working with? Interesting idea, though I don't think I'd strongly consider this.

4. What offenses, if any, do you consider auto-bannable, either permanent or temporarily?

Hard to say since everything happens with various circumstances, but if a member does any of the following they are likely to face some type of consequence, likely a temp ban at the very least:

Doxxing
Posting pornography
Posting member attack threads
Constant spamming
Repeatedly derailing debates

Those are what I can think of off the top of my head and each one has various degrees of severity based on circumstances, which may lead to differing consequences.

My concern with answering this is that it would require me to publicly address this issue, and Mirza more specifically, and I am not entirely comfortable with that at the moment.

Hypothetically, what would I have to do to get an immediate perma-ban?

Maliciously doxxing someone would make me perm ban you pretty quickly.

Has bluesteel officially resigned as voting moderator?

He didn't give me his signed resignation letter, but it's official as far as I'm concerned. If he ever wanted to be involved again, I think he knows he's always welcome to though.

Why is it okay to say that "homosexuals are inferior human beings who should be criminally prosecuted", but not okay to use the f*g word?

You already know the answer to this but I'll answer anyway, although with a lack of context here, my answer is going to be very basic. One has the potential to lead to a substantive discussion, while the other is just a hateful word meant to insult.

Have you ever felt like DDO moderation takes up too much of your time?

Sometimes. But I do a decent job of managing my time to make it feasible.

As with any film, sometimes there are production issues that make things take a bit longer. DDO: The Movie has experienced some difficulties, but it is on track to be released in the near future (Late October-December). You can't rush a masterpiece, and Imabench and I are committed to releasing the best film possible - even if that means we have to take a bit longer to get it right.

DDO: The Movie has experienced some difficulties, but it is on track to be released in the near future (Late October-December). You can't rush a masterpiece, and Imabench and I are committed to releasing the best film possible - even if that means we have to take a bit longer to get it right.

How about that forum glitch?

I can't specify the timeline on any current technical issues.

I'll take that as an "I suppose eventually".

I'm going to use your recommendation of 5-10 best-judges judge voting system. Who would you recommend as those 5-10 unbiased judges?

I'm interested in sending entries on the members nominated into the HOF next time (like the paragraph about them in each HOF post). How would I be able to do so?

It's a personal preference.

Though off the top of my head, quality voters include Bladerunner060, Whiteflame, Bsh1, Bluesteel, and F-16_fighting_falcon.

What is one thing you enjoy most about being the mod?

Do you ever regret taking on the responsibility of being a mod?

It's kind of complicated since it's not the kind of thing people volunteer for, since ideally it's written by someone close to that member and/or knows that member very well personally.

Once a person is voted into the Hall of Fame, I (along with whoever has been involved in the process like Imabench and recently Bsh1) consider who would be the most appropriate individuals to write their selection write-up based on who knows them best and whom that HOFer might appreciate most having write up that post.

So while I'm sure you would do a great job and write a great post, unless you are close to the selected member or know them very well, it's not something you'd otherwise be chosen for.
