This is just an post to update people on what I am doing for the forum revival program. I announced my effort in my midterm update [http://www.debate.org...] and so I just felt that it was important to report back.

My Plan

a) Oversee biweekly topics more closely and personally
b) Have a weekly contest for best OP (reward status tbd)
c) Enlist prominent members to make OPs in the forums each week (to last for a trial period of 4 weeks)
d) Have a sign-up for members interested in forum discussion, and, each week, to send those members 4-6 links to good threads to comment on
e) Work on bumping quality threads above excessive spam
f) Work on ways to build connections between the polls and the forums, to have an exchange of quality content
g) See if anyone would be interested in doing weekly column's in the forums, or putting together a "DDO Newsletter" in the forums

So Far

a) I will begin working more closely on the bi-weekly topics starting next week
b) I will announce the first contest this Monday. I will offer a free vote to the winner and will provide the top 3 OPs submitted with shout-outs. To be clear, I am promising that I would vote on a debate of the winner's choice, not that I will vote for the winner.
c) I have enlisted 10 users to make substantive posts and OPs each week for 4 weeks. This should generate some quality content.
d) I have had a running sign-up for people interested in receiving links to quality forum content [http://www.debate.org...] and I think that it has been received well
f) I am currently discussing with Airmax ways to have better cross-sectional relationships with the polls section to hopefully spark some good discussion.

Things to Emphasize

Regarding (e), I would ask that if users see forums where there is a lot of spam content, to please bump recent, good threads above the spam. This is not a license to necropost, as a reasonable person can determine whether a thread bump is recent and whether it is bumped over actual spam or not.

Secondly, to talk about (g), I have enlisted several users to participate in creating recurring series in the DDO forums. I think this has great potential to provide regular, content-generating fixtures on the forums. Below is a list of the series that will be hosted for the 4 week trial period or longer. Please keep an eye out for these threads!

YYW: "YYW on..."
Unitomic: "Controversy"
Bsh1: "The Ethics of..."
TheProphett: "FAB (Foreign Affairs Briefing)"

I think these series will certainly provide excellent formats for discussion. Their regularity should also mean that there is always a column or series for you to look at, and it means that these can become fixtures, so that people look out for them specifically.

[Just as a quick dislcaimer: while I am promoting these series, since I do not actually partake in writing these posts, I am not responsible for content I do not directly post.]

Summary

The objective of my effort here is to revive the forum by adopting a two-pronged approach to the problem. I am hoping to generate quality content and to bring users right to the quality content. Good posts are hardly going to spark discussion if no one sees them, which is why it is important for me to do what I can to bump, promote, and highlight quality content.

Here is the forum revival themesong. Replace the word "ghetto" with forum in every part of the song. You're welcome
