Hey! I decided to start this because it is something I have always thought was lacking. In this group pm, we can post our arguments and debates, and other beginners can critique and collaborate. Also, any thoughts or ideas can be shared here, and we can get a general discussion going. If you are interested, please sign up below.

More spots will be added if it actually is wanted by more people.

So do you want us to give links to our debates or just copy and paste our arguments into this thread?

I really like this idea, and I think it is a great way for beginners to learn.

I would just add this cautionary note: if you are receiving critiques or assistance on an ongoing debate, you must get your opponent's permission do this first, otherwise your opponent could reasonably describe your activities as cheating.

Both. It would be cool if people posted their arguments before hand so we could provide helpful criticism.

This debate is still going however it is on the final round and I've posted my round. Since I cannot do anything to change the course of this debate would I be allowed to ask for advice here?

In that case, yes. And, you can definitely get help in debates earlier on, but, in those cases, It is just polite and important for fairness that you clear that with your adversary.

TheProphett, shouldn't your name be in the list as well?

Anyway, famousdebater, in the debate you linked I got the impression you didn't understand the arguments your opponent, Zaradi, made. I can understand that, because he's using philosophy, which is almost always hard to understand. Especially the philosophy of Nietzsche is complicated. I don't understand his philosophy completely, but this is how I interpreted it:

Famousdebater: Animals have rights.
Zaradi: Why do animals have rights?
Famousdebater: Suffering is bad and those rights protect the animals from suffering.
Zaradi: Why is suffering bad?
Famousdebater: Suffering is bad, because my moral rules say it's bad.
Zaradi: Tell me, where are those moral rules coming from?
Famousdebater: They come from the 10 commandments.
Zaradi: So who says those 10 commandments tell THE moral rules?
Famousdebater: I and very many other people do.
Zaradi: Remember, people are flawed and make mistakes. Therefore you can't use people as sources for morality. So tell me again, why are the 10 commandments THE moral rules?
Famousdebater: Err... Because...
Zaradi: Just as I though. You base your entire case on your own laws of morality, but those laws are based on nothing. Therefore you don't have a case.

Again, Nietzsche's philosophy is complicated, so it's possible I misinterpreted it. Zaradi also talks about an alternative, but I didn't understand it at all, so I skipped that part.

Now for something different: I challenge somebody else who joined this beginner's PM to a debate. We can both use this forum as support. That way this PM can instantly be put to use.

By the way, what does PM mean? I know some clocks use AM/PM, but from the context it's safe to say that's not the meaning of PM here.

PM = private message.

If you see "send a message" on a profile, that is how to PM someone. Or, you can do it from your dashboard or inbox.
