Hey DDO!

It's been a little while since Imabench or I have posted any hype or updates for DDO: The Movie, so I figured it was best to reassure everyone that DDO: The Movie is still being worked on, it's still on track for its Winter release, and it is still going to be the greatest film in DDO history (and possibly the greatest film of all time, and the greatest thing ever produced in the history of the universe).

So worry not, DDO: The Movie is on its way and is coming to a DDO near you very soon!

With that in mind, I thought I would share some insight into what has lead to the difficulties of producing such a masterpiece, and share another clip from DDO: The Movie.

Early on in pre-development, Imabench and I had a discussion about what were the likely obstacles of developing such a project. We considered ideas such as using full foreign films, or using public domain films, since each presented artistic possibilities, and potential solutions for obstacles we would face. While in the case of the former, using a full film simplifies the process, and in the case of the latter, a public domain film has free usage rights.

In the end, we reached a conclusion that ultimately did away with both of these formats, but also presented us with several other challenges, while also expanding the potential for artistic freedom. By using individual scenes and clips from various films compiled together, we could more easily determine the plot and tone of the movie as we moved forward, and just as importantly, avoid a full-on copyright infringement issue for the entirety of the movie - potentially destroying all the work that went into it.

In other words, by customizing the individual scenes, we could develop a unique plot and story as we progressed, while also dealing with copyright issues on a scene by scene basis, rather than being limited by a single film (whether public domain or not) and avoid a possible problem with the whole film at the end.

However, as has proven to be the case, finding content that fits into the film that also doesn't get flagged for removal from it's IP owner has been a challenge. So not only do we have to find suitable content that fits into the artistic vision of the film, but after fitting the content into the film (and all of the work that entails from Imabench and his editing genius) we then have to hope that it doesn't get flagged for removal.

Ultimately this means that we have to make choices based on plot and substance, but we have to make changes based on whether or not that content also complies with what we can use. While this wasn't a huge deal in the early production stages, it has proven to be a far greater challenge in the late stages of development, since very specific scenes were intended to be used for specific purposes for various plot threads. This means that if a scene gets rejected towards the end, we have to go back and consider other scene options, rethink how we approach part of the movie, or reconsider an entire plot thread.

We probably could have decided to just cut some things out or shorten the movie, but the public demands a certain level of quality from an Imabench Productions/Airmax Anonymous film, and we decided very early on that we weren't going to cut any corners - even if it means that the movie might take a couple extra months to produce. In the end, this extra attention to detail and determination for making DDO: The Movie the greatest movie it possibly can be will pay off, and everyone will recognize that the extra hard work put into it was worth it when it is finally released.

With that in mind though, it does occasionally mean that certain scenes simply have to be removed because they no longer make sense. This is either because the plot thread couldn't be concluded, or because another better scene was used instead, making any number of elements in this previous scene (like characters, or plot points) no longer fit into the film as planned. This means that scenes that were really great unfortunately get cut and unused. A previous scene of this sort has already been posted in another DDO: The Movie update thread, and I'd like to share one of my favorite deleted scenes with you today:

tl;dr:

DDO: The Movie is a film in production by Imabench and Airmax. It is planned to be released in the near future, but it has faced many challenges due to the nature of its production. Nonetheless, Imabench and I are confident that it will be the greatest movie in the history of DDO and beyond.

I guess so... though I actually wanted people to read through a whole bunch of text rather than only read the tl;dr.
