Aloha, DDO!

Intro

Just another Presidential Update. I wanted to just plug a few programs that are currently going on:

1. We're in need of tournament mods! If you would like to be a mod for a beginners' or regular tournament, please contact me or Airmax to apply. Thanks!

2. If you would like to be mentored as part of the New User Mentorship Program, please contact Zaradi [http://www.debate.org...]. If you'd like to volunteer as a mentor, you may also reach out to him directly.

3. To submit a topic for the Bi-Weekly Topics, please contact Tej [http://www.debate.org...].

4. And, as always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to contact me, Zaradi, or BV. We'd be happy to listen and help.

Updates

- The progress report on the Forum Revival program was released a few days ago [http://www.debate.org...], and found that users generally had a positive opinion of its effects.
- We are vamping up our negotiations over the opt-in Voting Reform program, and we hope to announce more details in the coming months.

Announcement

The next update, on the 23rd, will be the last one of this term; it will be the 11th update. I may ask for some feedback about these updates in that post. If reelected, I will continue doing these updates, though, and I'd restart them shortly after the election.

Trivia

The history of the wheel is actually a pretty interesting one. We always think of it as one of the most basic inventions out there, on that is so basic that we sometimes forget how impressive the concept actually was to come up with. But, in fact, only 2 cultures have independently invented it, so it clearly wasn't as obvious to most people as it is to you and me. From 1 of those 2 cultures, it spread to Asia, Europe, and Africa. I speak, of course, of the Sumerians, who came up with the idea from their Mesopotamian Empire.

The other example of independent invention of the wheel--the ancient Aztecs--was less revolutionary. They used it in small gadgets, but failed to appreciate its potential applications in other areas, notably transport. In fact, no New World civilization used wheels in transportation--everything had to be carried by either dragging it or by placing it on a beast of burden. Sadly, the only large animal suitable to domestication in the New World was the Llama, which of course made using animals for labor difficult.

So, the wheel was only found in Aztec culture, and only in limited uses. It wasn't found in any other New World culture. The ancient Summerians also invented the wheel, and from their, the idea diffused into the rest of the Old World.

I had already given FT a bunch of shoutouts, so I was reluctant to do more. I can always feature your debate in the final update, so don't fret.
