I don't know about you, but for some reason I'm able to crank out 1000 word debate arguments like nothing, but when it comes to essays it's different. I don't really know why I'm not able to do the same. Does anyone else have this kind of thing occur with them or is this just me?

This definitely happens to me.

I feel you, I have next to no special ability with essay writing and it takes me two hours to dish out over 1200 words sometimes ._.
Then there's arguing where suddenly ideas flow through like water down a river steam.
Essays, writing 10 pages on something that can be explained in two sentences.

I can agree with you there.

I don't know for certain, but I have an idea that it's because you really have no obligation to accept a debate. Everything is of your own will so you perceive writing a long argument as fun. In school you must write an essay or face the consequences of bad grades. You don't really have a choice outside of dropping out. Maybe that's the reason.

Or maybe because the pressure is higher. At the most I suffer a number going up if I fail at a debate, but if you fail an essay you suffer much more.

I think it's because arguments are your opinion, while essays are you regurgitating information.

Can I quote that?

Part of the reason is with arguments, you have something to respond to. In a way your opponent is helping you by giving you content to write, rather than you having to think of everything yourself.
