This has happened to me before so I'll ask this question to see if it's okay.

My opponent broke the rules of the debate and then said that they didn't break the rules, but merely distorted them. They then said that there was no rule against rule distortion so the rule violation was valid.

Is this okay?

I am not familiar with the incident in question, but probably not. You agree to the rules as they stand. Saying that you distorted the rules is euphemistic--it is just an admission that you broke them but don't want to admit it. Moreover, if you distort the rules, then you can gain an unfair advantage. Rules are written as they are to ensure debaters have an even playing field; but, if one debater can grossly contort those rules, he or she gains an unfair advantage, thus destroying the purposes of having rules in the first place. Obviously, therefore, rules must be followed as they are most straightforwardly interpreted; they cannot be distorted.

Also, it is silly to say that there needs to be a rule against rule distortion for rule distortion to be prohibited. That is like saying, you need a rule against violating the rules for rule violation to be prohibited.

You know not to violate rules because that is inherent to the definition and purpose of what a rule is, just as you know not to distort rules because that is inherent to the definition and purpose of rules.

Ah, I see. Well, I generally agree with everything Whiteflame said in that debate.
