You like learning stuff, right?

What if I promised you that I would write a themed game so unbelievably educational and boring that you would not only learn mafia, but would likely spend the entirety of the day (and night phases) googling and wikipedia'ing, in lieu of playing "useless mafia?"

I can make that happen--ask any of these guys about my ability to right confounding themed games.

Why not simply study the topic? Obviously, designing a game around a theme will take far longer than mere studying.

Opportunity cost, of course: You would learn more in a 30-minuted themed game than you would studying for an hour. That's because you may be inclined to study at a pace normal or comfortable for you--but the game adds a new dimension, i.e., pressure at figuring things out quickly, and there are 7-8 other people in the same situation. It's almost like having 8 intelligent study buddies learning an entire language with you in a half hour.

That's fair. I watched an interesting (and relatively short) Ted Talk on the pointlessness of small talk that I think you might enjoy. In it, the speaker describes a party where the party-goers did not exchange names or pleasantries, but rather responded to a list of open-ended and thought-provoking questions with strangers throughout the night.

That is far more productive. I've always secretly wished I didn't have to wade through the usual 5-10 minutes of inane chit-chat, just so I could talk about things of matter. I will have a look -- thanks.

No, I'm not. The game is already made. That's time that I, the mod, invested. You could make the case that I'm wasting my time because I already know this stuff--which is fair--but it's no investment on the player's side.

The moving parts are (a) pressure and (b) getting eight people together in a room. You need not have (b) in order to get (a), but (a) provides an *incentive* (Econ 101) to get people together for (b), making the conjunction of (a) and (b) far more likely.

Sure thing. The speaker also has some suggestions on how to avoid small talk in life more generally, so I hope you find it helpful.

LOL.

Dude, that's the entire selling point: the game will be so fcking complex that she'll walk out learning something--it provides intellectual fulfillment (unless you lynch her DP1).

You really do not have to, and should not justify yourself to her. She has no right to question your choices, and we all enjoy when you mod games.

You're forgetting the time required to structure the entire event, of which out-values the specific, individual time invested (i.e. the player's time).

No, I'm not. The game is already made. That's time that I, the mod, invested. You could make the case that I'm wasting my time because I already know this stuff--which is fair--but it's no investment on the player's side.

You really do not have to, and should not justify yourself to her. She has no right to question your choices, and we all enjoy when you mod games.

I appreciate this, but I wasn't justifying myself to her: I was only pointing out her misconception that structuring the game is an investment of the player's time that detracts from the overall experience.
