Welcome to DDO's February Beginner's Tournament. As this is my first time hosting, I'll try my best to make it a good effort.

The Beginner's Tournament will pit the site's up and coming new members against each other for fame, glory, and most importantly, education.

Requirements:

To sign up for the February Beginner's Tournament, you must have less than 15 debates, but more than 1 debate. This is because debating isn't a process you can learn about from a mentor without having already experienced it. OR you must have more 1 debate and an elo of 2,250 or less.

Essentially, you must fall into one of the two requirements:
- More than 1 debate, less than 15.
- More than 1 debate, less than 2,250 elo.

Only 8 members will be picked. You will be paired with a random member during the first set of debates.

Mentors:

Each of the first 4 debates will have a mentor assigned to them. This allows each debater to be up against a debater aided by an equally-skilled mentor. The mentor will then follow the winner to the next stage.

To become a mentor, you must meet each of the following: 50 Debates with a win ratio of above 75% and 300 votes.

While having many debates may mean you're an experienced debater, it doesn't make you an experienced mentor. You WILL be aiding in devil's advocate a number of times, and so having an extensive voting record will help imply you have experience with the merits and arguments of both sides of a debate. Your record will be under review, to ensure your experience is one of unbias voting, as such a record contradicts the point of the voting requirement.

I'd consider mentoring, but I approach it in a way that resembles Socrates' method of teaching, and my style requires an active pursuit of knowledge by the mentee.

I think you should change this rule. there are 76 memebers who have over 300 votes, and about 20 members visit the site these days, and about 15 of them actually vote on debates.

In my opinion, you should just select a list of mentors, instead of keeping mentor sign-ups open, and PM them, like Chris does. For instance, Raisor only has 239 votes but is perfectly capable of being an exceptional mentor. I'd just request a certain group of people. And you should be willing to veto mentor requests as well.

The rules are only guidelines for quality assurance. I know Raisor can mentor and teach people regardless of what side of the debate they are on, and so i don't need to follow the guidelines when selecting him. His quality has already been assured.

How are topics selected?

I mean, I want to ensure that I won't get stuck arguing enthralling topics such as the proper way to chew grains of sand or whether perflourooctanoic acid should be banned from microwave popcorn bags. It should by the way. But that's getting off topic.

That isn't my only disagreement -- you should close mentorship applications for public and PM select people alone to mentor

Why? Signing up doesn't make you a mentor. Anyone who meets the requirement can sign up, but as the thread says, your record will be under review first.

Sign ups only help me find who is both qualified AND interested. I ultimately decide who i accept. And as you're aware, I am already sending out pms. There is no point and closing out sign ups, as it would only hurt my ability to find members i would not have prior considered.

I did. He falls under the second option in the requirements field... 1+ debate and an elo of less than 2250.
