I don't think that means they are stupid. Being new to the site, they are unaware that people are often expected to spend hours on their arguments and use a majority of the character limit. They are not yet invested enough into the site to consider putting that much effort into their first couple of debates.

If you count average teens who are tired of Facebook and are flocking to DDO, then yes.

Some of the newer members have been of lower quality than usual. It's not even like I've seen a potentially good member in the past couple months, unless I'm thinking someone as older than they are - which I do not believe I am.

I think when people on this website accuse others of being "stupid", it just generally means the other people have differing views from the accuser.

Yeah, especially those people who write sentences on separate lines, and never end anything with a period. SMH.

Clearly, you haven't considered that many are working people with families and other commitments, thus making time to write an essay, a luxury.

I was never one of those members because I read others debates before I actually starting debating. I do know what you're talking about though. It's usually because they don't know about how much is expected of them.

Even when they do read some of the debates of other members, they could still get the wrong idea by observing the debates of other newer or less skilled members.

True, but I looked at the top 10 elo leaderboard for good debaters. I know elo isn't the perfect skill measuring system however Bluesteel, whiteflame, Bsh, Roy and Danielle are pretty much the best debaters on the site and I read all of their work before making a debate. That's why with my first debates I wrote up 8 - 10K characters of text.

Many new members are unaware that users even have Elo's, let alone there being an Elo leaderboard. I was one of them for the first couple weeks I was here.

No one writes like this. A proper writing style is a sentence after the other, separated by proper punctuation. It's tiresome to read a debate where it's a statement after statement without proper punctuation. It's as if you were bullet pointing.

People also sometimes put a revolver in their mouth and pull the trigger.
"The Collectivist experiment is thoroughly suited (in appearance at least) to the Capitalist society which it proposes to replace. It works with the existing machinery of Capitalism, talks and thinks in the existing terms of Capitalism, appeals to just those appetites which Capitalism has aroused, and ridicules as fantastic and unheard-of just those things in society the memory of which Capitalism has killed among men wherever the blight of it has spread."

I'm actually very underwhelmed with the site at the moment. It may be a lack of intelligent arguments from quality debaters, but I may just finish up my open debates and crawl back into the hole I emerged from. Hell, I've yet to see any of the ELO Leaderboard debaters even near the debate section.

I'm typically open to most coherent sports debates. I was on SI's FanNation (which had sports debates called TDs) from 2010 til it went kaput about a year and a half ago. This is the closest I've come to replicating the competitiveness of that site.

But the atmosphere of the site and the general knowledge of the inhabitants make it a less than ideal replacement for arguing sports. Ah... so it goes with nostalgia. Even while on FN, we hated it there, yet we've found no other replacement...
