If DDO is a place to refine your *debate* skills, and not just your *logical* skills, then jokes, logical fallacies, etc. should be allowed to guide your decision on who won the debate.

If someone makes a really good argument in the real world, and you retort with a joke that silences them into embarrassment and frustration, most people will look at you and think you've won the argument and turned your opponent into a stupid, silly sardonic Steve.

Think about it. It makes sense. DDO needs more focus on rhetoric, even if that means people find jokes and logical fallacies more convincing.

In addition, this will provide us with an incentive to be able to wittingly rebut and how to properly deal with things we'd be likely to encounter in the real world, and thus make us more persuasive in real life.

Otherwise, DDO is a waste of time for any practical debating purposes.

Putting out the fire by micturating was therefore a kind of sexual act with a male, an enjoyment of sexual potency in a homosexual competition."

Interesting concept. It would make debating and voting more entertaining.

Indeed. I believe it would help make us better debaters as well. Of course, online debating can't improve your vocal presentation, but acting like a robot and logically picking apart your opponent's argument... come on, we can do better than that.

Apparently, through my discussion with other members, I'm not the only one who feels debaters on DDO need to work on their rhetoric.

I agree. Their rhetoric is terrible -- a total mess, almost as much of a mess as Crooked Hillary. Total loser. Sad!

Actually, Donald Trump is a good example of the type of rhetoric that convinces people. A good debater would be able to use these tools, in addition to great arguments. DDO doesn't have enough members who know how to present their arguments in a rhetorically convincing manner. Many people debate like robots on this website.

As someone who debates like a robot, I agree with you in a sense, though I think rhetoric shouldn't completely supplant evidence as a means of persuasion, as is the case with Trump.

You're right. But right now we're very much skewed towards debating like robots and not like people with personalities and character in our arguments.

Sometimes writing debate replies feel so formatted. Much like: Main Argument, Rebuttal, Counter Rebuttal, Counter Point, etc. etc. It's so boring it makes my eyes glaze over. Even good topics are boring when they're presented by a robot.

This is true, though I think it nonetheless beats out Trumpian debating style, if only by a little, because it's true to what debating really should be about.

Come on folks. Christopher Hitchens was one of the most compelling people I have ever listened to. He's really a great speaker and very eloquent. But still, he's a smart guy. I might disagree with him on many areas, but I will admit, he is a great debater.

Nobody on this website is near as convincing as Hitchens in their style.

Maybe. But see my post about Christopher Hitchens. If you prove to someone you're right, and you build a relationship so they like you and think you're a cool person, they will be more receptive to your message, and will actually want to listen to what you have to say. Your arguments will not just be logical but also listened to.

I totally agree with this: there has to be a balance between persuasion, which appeals to people on a personal level, and evidence. Hitchens was indeed extremely talented at that: Trump, not so much.
