Aloha, and welcome to Round 1 of the Unique Topics Tournament! Below is the information you will need this round. Good luck!

===================

The Set-Up

This is, again, a single-elimination tournament. All competitors have been seeded based on their ELO (as assessed today), to generate high-low pairings along a bracket. The winner of the tournament is the person who will successfully negotiate the bracket without being eliminated.

Topic Information

Round 1 has begun, and you now have 5 days to select a topic. You may choose from a topic on the list provided in the sign up thread, or you may create a topic yourself, in conjunction with your opponent. You and your opponent must agree on a topic. If you create a topic yourselves, you must submit this topic to me for approval, so that I can gauge whether it is sufficiently unique for inclusion in this tournament; my decision will be based exclusively on my own judgement. If you fail to get my pre-approval and start the debate anyway, I will not count your debate on that topic as part of the tournament. If you select one of the 65 listed topics, you do not need my pre-approval to move ahead with your debate. Here is the link to the list of topics: http://www.debate.org...

You may not repeat a topic already used in the tournament. Topics are taken on a "first-come, first-served" basis, so once you have selected a topic, post that topic in this thread to claim it for you own. Topics that are not sufficiently different from previously used ones will not be allowed. There will be no troll topics permitted.

If you and your adversary fail to agree on a topic within the 5 days, I will assign you a topic from my list of 65 and a side, and designate an instigator. You must then start (start means send and accept the challenge) the debate within 72 hours. Failure of the instigator to start the debate on the assigned topic, or of the contender to accept the topic, will result in an automatic win for the other party.

Debates

Debates must have at least 3 rounds of debating (acceptance rounds are not "debating") and must have at least 7,000 characters allotted per round. Voting periods should not be below 1 week, and should not exceed 2 weeks. After 2 weeks have passed, I will assess the victor irrespective of whether voting has or has not closed. Everything else about the debate's structure is up to your and your opponent to decide upon.

In the event of a tie, I will enlist a credible, impartial 3rd party to select a victor based on how they would've voted had they voted. If that is not satisfactory to both competitors, a coin flip will be used.

The Bracket

1. Danielle
16. Uther
----------------------- (1/16 vs. 8/9)
8. Think
9. Cobalt
------------------------------------------------------- (1/16/8/9 vs. 4/13/7/10)
7. Peepette
10. Oreo
----------------------- (4/13 vs. 7/10)
4. Hayd
13. Vind
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Final Round)
3. Wylted
14. Amed
----------------------- (3/14 vs. 6/11)
6. Diqi
11. Objectivity
------------------------------------------------------- (3/14/6/11 vs. 5/12/2/15)
5. Fire
12. User
----------------------- (5/12 vs. 2/15)
2. Tej
15. Lannan

17. Replacement (if need be, only for R1)

For a nicer version of the bracket, consult this link: https://docs.google.com... I will be updating this link as results come in, so everyone can see how the tournament is progressing.

Your opponent, for clarity's sake, is the person immediately next to you on the bracket. So, for instance, Tej and Lannan are paired for this round, as are Hayd and Vind. If you have any questions though, please lemme know.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone!

Oh, this was what Wylted was talking about. If I was excluded because I closed my PMs that's understandable. If it was for another reason, please let me know why? We can conversate on this thread if you'd like to, or just tell me here. [http://www.debate.org...]

I would prefer that you do 2, just to produce more good debates for the site. However, I will not prohibit you from doing a 2-in-1 if you want...You should also clear it with the other tournament host.

Can Lannan and I do one debate for two tournaments?

I would prefer that you do 2, just to produce more good debates for the site.

Good logic... but we just can't decide on even one topic, let alone two...

I'm okay for you doing one debate for mine and Bsh's tournaments if Bsh agrees.

Oh how many people would think the tournament is rigged.

Indeed, lol.

Should I just ask Amedyxius what topic we should debate then? Am I officially subbing in for Wylted?

I have received no PM from Wylted. Until I do, Wylted is still occupying that tournament slot.

I'll tell him to shoot you a PM.

This is really similar to a PF topic we had many years ago.

I didn't realize it until you pointed it out, but yeah. I think there are some subtle differences though: private corporations may be different from the private sector, and space travel may also be different from space exploration. IDK though--it may produce a similar kind of debate, but it's still not a topic that feels frequently used on DDO, so it's all good.

It is a good topic, and space travel is a lot more balanced than space exploration. I don't see private corporations exploring to Mars, but I could easily see doing things that are profitable in places that have already been explored, like mining the moon or taking wealthy passengers into orbit

No. Let's move this discussion to a PM, rather than clog this thread, please.

ATTENTION

Wylted has dropped out of the tournament. I am bumping Hayd to 3rd seed, and filling Hayd's old spot with Bball. Everyone else occupies the same space in the bracket as they did before. The effected debaters will have 1 extra day to select topics.

Oh, this was what Wylted was talking about.

No it wasn't. I have no idea why Wylted chose to reach out to the specific people he did on this, though I think I can guess. We can either discuss it when its announced or via PM.

He maybe your President - but he isn't mine!!! I trust NOTHING about him, and will ignore him for his entire administration if he stays active. His VP I actually respect though.
