Intro

I ran a pilot program for my proposed New User Mentoring Program that I would put into effect if elected. I did outreach, and tried some different things - and failed most of the time. Sometimes I got people to become more active, and then they fizzled out. I should have done better - and I plan on learning from my mistakes with this new, reorganized public version of the program.

The Idea

To grab a noob's interest, constant interest must be shown - not just in their growth as a member, but also interest in them as a person. The fact of the matter is that most members don't stay for the same reason they joined the site - at least, not solely the original reason. Many members stay because of the connections they form here, along with the benefits of being on a debate site.

That said, mentoring is not a one-size-fits-all issue. It is a mistake to assume all noobs just need to learn how to debate and vote to become good members. Different noobs will have different strengths to be encouraged.

Think about the people who make the community great. If we only had the "best debaters" here, things would honestly get a bit boring. Not only would the site be less dynamic - debating with so few people would get really boring extremely quickly.

During the best time periods of DDO, we had smaller-impact members that still had respect and brought the site character. In that respect, the more the merrier. Thus, this program has the potential to be a force for good on DDO - and that's why I'm making it no matter what.

Sign-up

However, to properly do this program, I need the help of the community. One person can only do so much for the site. Thus, we need to work together. This is especially true in a program where the volunteers can easily suffer from burnout if overworked. And for this program to work, I need people who can help with debating, voting, games, and more personal things - and I love people who can help with all of those things.

Note: As the director of the program, I reserve the right to evaluate fitness for this program. If you are an established member, however, it is highly unlikely I will remove you. Copy and paste this list, and add numbers as necessary.

Taking a noob can be a commitment of months in the program, but the relationship may very well be longer. Keep that in mind. The first attempt might not work, but failure is a fact of reaching out - it's on us to get better, and to help each other.

What, specifically, should mentors mentor them about?

I can do debate/voting mentorship... but there ends my involvement in the site, really.

I think it's best to try getting mentors to best fit the strengths and/or interests of a member, so you would be assigned to someone who is strong in or is most interested in being better in those categories.

And note that when I say "assigned" - that isn't the only way you can take a noob. If you find someone on your own and you start to help them, and you were a part of this program - I would note that you are mentoring that noob. This is for the sake of getting noobs more easily to established mentors.

"The Collectivist experiment is thoroughly suited (in appearance at least) to the Capitalist society which it proposes to replace. It works with the existing machinery of Capitalism, talks and thinks in the existing terms of Capitalism, appeals to just those appetites which Capitalism has aroused, and ridicules as fantastic and unheard-of just those things in society the memory of which Capitalism has killed among men wherever the blight of it has spread."

Bump. I don't know if I'll bump after this one - if I want anyone to join after the end of the weekend I might just PM potential people.
