Intro

In the past week, both Mikal and I have made DDO mentoring/adopt-a-noob programs. In the interest of easily running the idea, we decided to merge our respective programs. This thread serves as said merger.

Idea

If you find a new user who has not visibly figured out how to use the site, it may be best to help introduce them. For basic use of DDO, these links can be given.

(1) New Users Page - http://www.debate.org...
(2) Ragnars New User Guide - https://docs.google.com...
(3) Official Debating Guide - https://docs.google.com...
(4) Link to Airmaxs Profile - http://www.debate.org...
(5) Basic Summary of Voting - http://www.debate.org...

Once they have been given the basic information to use the site, and you have talked to them for some time, you might ask them if they would like to join this mentoring program. Then, you can become their mentor - or if you already have one - it may be best to ask other mentors in the program if they would like to take that noob.

Or, if you do not have the time to find new members, or you are having trouble getting a noob, I can assign noobs to willing mentors.

Mentoring

Your goal ought to be to integrate a noob into the site. There are many niches they can find - and as their mentor you should help them grow into that niche. People are by definition unique, and thus mentoring will never be a one-size-fits-all concept. Noobs should also be led into the forums, which is where the personal aspect of the community is defined most. The fact of the matter is that most members don't stay for the same reason they joined the site - at least, not solely the original reason. Many members stay because of the connections they form here, along with the benefits of being on a debate site.

As a mentor, you do these things

(1) Tell them ways to structure debates, formal etiquette on site debates, the opt in system, voting etc. Give them lists of good voters - which can help them get an idea of how voting is best done. (Ex: How to vote in depth - http://www.debate.org...)
(2) Tell them about mafia.
(3) Tell them about fan fics - http://www.debate.org...
(4) Show them that DDO is also a place where people have fun. (Ex: DDO movie: http://www.debate.org...)
(5) Take personal interest in them.

To grab a noob's interest, constant interest must be shown - not just in their growth as a member, but also interest in them as a person. A mix of site-based and personal-based help can be immensely powerful in getting people to stay on the site. Encourage their strengths on the site, but don't be robotic.

Be careful about taking more than one noob at a time. Doing so can create burnout, and is generally advised against. Having just one noob will make your time much easier - in getting to know the noob and helping them as members. And as a result of you having an easier time, the noobs' experiences will be better off.

Think about the people who make the community great. If we only had the "best debaters" here, things would honestly get a bit boring. Not only would the site be less dynamic - debating with so few people would get really boring extremely quickly. Older members have noted this multiple times. During the best time periods of DDO, we had smaller-impact members that still had respect and brought the site character. In that respect, the more the merrier. Thus, this program has the potential to be a force for good on DDO - and that's why I'm making it no matter what.

Sign-up

However, to properly do this program, the help of the community is needed. One person can only do so much for the site. Thus, we need to work together.

Taking a noob can be a commitment of months in the program, but the relationship may very well be longer. Keep that in mind. The first attempt might not work, but failure is a fact of reaching out - it's on us to get better, and to help each other.

Combined sign-up (with noobs on right and sign-up before merger in parentheses):

1. Mikal - David_Debates (Mikal)
2. Harder (Harder)
3. Tej (Harder)
3. lannan13 (Both)
4. Skepsikyma - Minddrag (Harder)
5. Missbailey8 (Harder)
6. Fire_Wings (Both)
7. UtherPenguin (Harder)
8. Bballcrook21 - Blamonkey (Both)
9. Vaarka (Harder)
10. YYW - Region (Mikal)
11. Rosalie - Tokamak (Mikal)
12. TBR (Mikal)
13. Adam_Godzilla (Mikal)

I PM'ed this user: http://www.debate.org... He seems interested in the program, and asks what us mentors do, but he didn't actually say he will do it.

I'll mentor her the basics. She does know fan fictions. I can just do one noob for both programs, right?

It's one program now.

Also, Fire, I think that undertaking this is something a bit more in depth than "basic". I can do that in an hour.

Not that kind of basic. Basic, by meaning learning almost everything, for around 2 weeks.

It's one program now.

Also, Fire, I think that undertaking this is something a bit more in depth than "basic". I can do that in an hour.

Not that kind of basic. Basic, by meaning learning almost everything, for around 2 weeks.

What basics take two weeks to teach?

I dunno, I'll just do it

That doesn't really give me any confidence.

If there is an updated count of willing mentors - please include my name on that list. I'd be more than happy to help in this merged effort. As a current mentor in Hayd's program, I can attest that this does help.

I also think that it'd be good to include all 1st-time mentors in a group PM, where some of the more experienced mentors can share some tips and past experiences that would help them when taking on their first new member.

I can be a mentor. I've mentored around 3 or 4 users in total before so I'm confident in mentoring.

I was thinking about running a PM for those who signed up in this thread and Mikal's who don't have a noob yet. Would you rather a PM with everyone (including those in my first sign-up) who doesn't have a noob?

I would like to thank, and give a shout out to, Harder and Mikal for setting this up.

So you want me to get her a mentor?

I'll mentor her the basics. She does know fan fictions. I can just do one noob for both programs, right?

You don't sound all that confident in your mentoring abilities. How are you going to teach "the basics" of DDO in two weeks?

I have a way of matching noobs to mentors to measure their interest in multiple things on the site. I've yet to have any noob that is only interested in debating, but I'll direct them to you if I find any.

There are some members that are kind of new but aren't in the program and some other members I know of that might want straight-up debate mentoring. If you want to know (I don't know if they're in your program already), just PM me.

Why does debate have to be their *only* interest on the site lol? They just have to be interested in debating to be interested in debate mentorship. The exception would be for people that came to the site for *only* community things in the forums, or the polls or whatever. But having them *only* be interested in debating doesn't make sense. Just letting your people know that if the noob is interested in debating (and are doing good debate topics) to ask if they want to be mentored and direct 'em to me.

Just ask them, or have someone ask them if they are interested in debate mentorship (briefly explain what it is), if they are already in it they will say so, if not direct them to me. Just asking them takes care of the problem of whether they are already in it. And there's no scenario where I woudn't want them, but I don't see the need to PM you.

Not necessarily only interest, but extremely dominant interest. All of the noobs I've talked to have had a sort of mix in their interest.

Noob just means that they're new to the site or that they're inexperienced. I see nothing wrong with the title.

That's good that they have mixed interest. But why does having mixed interest mean they can't do mentorship? All they have to do is have interest in debating, doesn't mean they can't have interest in anything else lol

Noob = new member. Easier to type ---> it's what I type.

I don't really think it's all that offensive. I was a noob once, and I'm not anymore. It's only undesirable to look like a noob if you've been here long enough to know better.
