My roommate wants to get a Link card which is basically a debit card with $200 that you get every month to use for food. You qualify for this card if you make under $20,000 (http://www.dhs.state.il.us...). She wants all of her friends to apply too, that way we get a bunch of money for food every month which would help us out a lot - especially if we share. However, her boyfriend keeps warning that it messes up your credit. I never heard such a thing and couldn't find anything online about it (though admittedly I didn't look very hard).

The only thing I've noticed before were job applications asking whether or not I have received a Link card within the past few years. However I thought that was for data collection lol could be wrong though... or as proof that the workplace hires low-income people. Anyway, does anyone know the exact repercussions, if any, of getting this food stamp type program? I couldn't get one anyway cuz I'm not an Illinois resident, but I was just wondering if her boyfriend was right or not (and it would be awesome if he wasn't).

Lol, it's called food stamps.

Anyone approved to receive cash assistance or SNAP (Food Stamps) benefits will be issued an Illinois Link card.

Receipt of public assistance is a prohibited basis for the report of credit.

So there are no negative repercussions? If she applies for a job, will it come back to bite her in the a$s or look bad on any job or government info?

Employers get a tax credit if they hire people on food stamps. So, if anything, being on food stamps would.

Food stamp information has no bearing on credit history.

If the job asks--- maybe. It certainly doesn't look good on a resume, but frankly, how many employers are going to give a **** other than Nags' tax credit point.

I certainly can't find anything illegal about discriminating on this grounds if you're an employer rather than a credit agency (though they can't find out without your consent, they can probably make asking a job condition), but hell, even people who hate welfare recipients deep in their gut are glad to see someone taking initiative to NOT be a welfare recipient.

Wouldn't they kind of have to?

Why is everyone so eager to jump abroad the welfare train and take stolen money? Come on, a person can easily survive with only $10,000 a year salary.

Are you serious? Some people have children and other dependants to take care of, and I don't know what kind of standard of living you think one can obtain in a modern city on $10,000 p/a. Maybe if you've got rich parents to help you out in tough times.

Its fair enough rationalization. Thats how he rationalizes using roads etc. He might as well take the goods he's paying for. That doesn't mean he is no longer entitled to complain that he is being forcibly swindled.

There are only one kind of roads/highways, and those are government-owned. There are public and privates institutions of higher learning. Also, "etc" should be preceded with more than one example.

$10,000 is enough to support yourself. I didn't say it was enough to support a family.

Ooh....I actually go to a public university, so technically I'm stealing from others as well. But I also went to a public elementary school and a public high school, so I was stealing during those times as well.

But unless I kick the bucket early or live in poverty the rest of my life, one the government will steal from me.

You apparently have no idea of what supporting yourself financially entails.

$10,000 = £6,267

This is less than average residential rent over one year. http://www.rentindex.co.uk...
The most meagre diet wih a base level of nutrition is likely to cost at least £20 a week, that's £1000.
Income tax, council tax, transport, clothing, heating, lighting... In America you need to pay for healthcare too.

Maybe you should try surviving on $10,000 a year before you talk about how easy it is.

Actually, I only survive on about $10,000 a year which is why I said it was easy. I only pay $450 in rent (I live in a fairly small apartment). The rest can go to food and other expenditures. I actually excluded cost of health care (under parents plan), although you can take the risk and not have coverage, and just hope nothing bad happens.

No, the government is. Is whether the gov't is going to steal marginal to your decision?
